Job Description:

• The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health is seeking a qualified Community Maternal Child Health Worker to provide community engagement, education and connection to health and wellbeing programs for mothers, children, and their families. This position engages families with the goal of supporting positive parent-child attachment, promoting child and family health and development, and enhancing family resilience.
• Overall responsibilities include engaging with families in the community to promote maternal and child health programs, initiating and maintaining regular contact with families in their homes and in the community, engaging family participants in activities, providing resources, referrals, and advocacy, and working with community partners to meet the families' needs. Facilitate and coordinate maternal and child health programs such as the car seat safety program, safe sleep initiative, and community diaper bank coordination. Required to use personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement offered.

Mandatory skills/certification(s) Requirement:

• Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills and be fluent in English.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Knowledge of infant and child development and parent-child attachment, knowledge of maternal-infant health and dynamics of child abuse and neglect.
• Applicants should be skilled in working with families and children, able to establish and maintain professional boundaries, and commit to required VBDPH training. Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to 4 years in a human services or public health-related field utilizing the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous public health experience; previous experience working with culturally diverse populations. Proficiency in reading and writing. Spanish speaking is helpful but not mandatory.
• Special Requirements: Driver's License: Selected candidates will be required to possess a valid driver's license prior to the first day of employment.
