Power Systems Automation Engineer

Overview The devices we make at SEL are embedded in the power grid. They prevent blackouts and make outages safer and shorter in duration. By adding cybersecurity, automation, and communication, these devices operate at speeds that push other pieces of the grid to go faster. As a Power Systems Automation Engineer, you’ll provide solutions and services that help customers protect and control critical electrical infrastructure and power systems worldwide. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent engineering degree. 3+ years of experience in power systems automation and communication. Relevant experience with utility/industrial power systems, focusing on automation, communications, and control. Knowledge of SCADA fundamentals and protocols (DNP3, Modbus, SEL, IEC 61850, Ethernet/IP, OPC UA). Familiarity with RTUs, RTACs, IEDs, SEL Relays (3XX‑8XX series), PLCs, HMIs, serial (EIA‑232, EIA‑485) and Ethernet (TCP/IP, UDP) communications. Experience with firewalls, security gateways (SEL‑362X), terminal servers (SEL‑3610), cellular routers (SEL‑3061 or equivalent), managed network switches, and SDN. Programming in IEC 61131‑3 (Structured Text, Continuous Function Chart, Ladder Diagram). Troubleshooting with Wireshark. Excellent communication, customer service, and training skills. Ability to maintain composure under challenging circumstances and work collaboratively in a team. Good written and verbal technical training skills. Ability to travel up to 30% of the time. Responsibilities Maintain and improve knowledge of power systems, SCADA, integration system automation, and all related SEL products. Help customers apply SEL products through visits, demonstrations, training courses, and phone contact. Apply principles, theories, standard techniques, and concepts to provide solutions to a variety of problems. Contribute to product specifications, application and testing software, and literature. Participate in SEL marketing and sales activities, industry technical meetings, and conferences. Teach SEL University courses within the core area. Contribute to and review white papers, application guides, industry journals, and technical papers. Interact with a diverse range of customers, solving technical problems and teaching the best solutions through various channels. Location The position may be based in one of the following locations: Fairview Heights, IL; Lakewood, CO; Boerne, TX. Benefits Competitive pay and a 100% employee‑owned company.
