Job Summary

W e are seeking an experienced Honing Operator to operate horizontal honing machines and produce precision components that meet strict dimensional, geometric, and surface-finish requirements. This role is responsible for machine setup and operation, precision inspection, material handling, equipment maintenance, and maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment.

Job Description

• Operate horizontal honing machines, including Sunnen or similar equipment, to perform precision honing operations.
• Set up honing tools, stones, mandrels, fixtures, and machine parameters according to work instructions and engineering requirements.
  
• Load and unload workpieces safely using overhead cranes and appropriate lifting devices.
  
• Inspect lifting equipment before use and follow established crane, rigging, and material-handling procedures.
  
• Monitor machining processes and make adjustments to achieve required bore size, geometry, tolerances, and surface finish.
  
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and work instructions.
  
• Perform in-process and final inspections using bore gauges, micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments.
  
• Record inspection results and production data accurately.
  
• Perform routine machine cleaning, lubrication, and preventive maintenance.
  
• Identify and report equipment malfunctions, tooling issues, dimensional concerns, or other quality problems.
  
• Maintain a clean and organized work area in accordance with 5S and workplace safety requirements.
  
• Follow all company safety, quality, and environmental procedures.
  
• Support other machining and finishing operations as needed.
  
• Cross-train and operate similar manufacturing equipment, including gun drilling and deburring equipment.

S kills Required

• Direct experience operating horizontal honing machines.
• 5+ years of honing machine operation experience preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and work instructions.
• Strong understanding of precision measurements, dimensional tolerances, geometric requirements, and surface finishes.
• Experience machining complex and/or high-value components.
• Ability to use precision inspection equipment such as bore gauges, micrometers, and calipers.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
• Ability to safely handle large or heavy workpieces and follow established lifting and rigging procedures.
• Willingness to cross-train and operate other machining and finishing equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience operating Sunnen or other honing machine brands specified in the position requirements.
• Previous overhead crane operation experience.
• Forklift experience or certification is a plus, but not required.
• Experience operating additional machine shop equipment.
• Experience with gun drilling, deburring, or other machining and finishing processes.

Education

• High school diploma or GED required

Pay Rate

• $20 - $25 per hour (Compensation will be offered based on experience, skills, and market factors)
