Durable Medical Equipment Coordinator Respiratory therapy

Job Description Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides advanced-level respiratory care to patients, diagnosing, evaluating, treating, managing, and controlling cardiopulmonary deficiencies or abnormalities as prescribed by the ordering physician. The RRT acts as a resource to the CRT staff and may be responsible for special clinical projects or assignments as designated by leadership according to department needs. Specific Posting Registered Respiratory DME Coordinator oversees the delivery, authorization, and setup of respiratory equipment to support efficient patient discharge, collaborating closely with case management to coordinate complex discharge plans, ensure clinical needs are met, and resolve insurance barriers that could delay care transitions. Key Responsibilities Facilitate respiratory DME discharge—arrange timely delivery and setup of oxygen, BiPAP, CPAP, nebulizers, and related equipment to support safe discharge. Coordinate complex discharges—collaborate with case managers, physicians, and DME vendors to streamline plans for patients with multifaceted respiratory needs. Troubleshoot insurance issues—verify coverage, obtain authorizations, resolve denials, and communicate alternatives to prevent discharge delays. Schedule Full time: 36 hours Four days per week, 7:30 am–5:00 pm; must be available for weekends. Essential Functions Perform, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol; obtain arterial gases; oversee and troubleshoot equipment operation for optimal patient care; initiate respiratory protocol and interventions based on assessment interpretations. Administer medications timely and safely; evaluate effects and re-evaluate appropriately according to protocol; communicate patient progress to staff, physicians, and other departments. Maintain awareness of assigned patient’s overall condition; communicate and share patient information with physicians and nurses; make appropriate recommendations for patient care. Recognize educational needs of patients and families regarding health promotion and wellness; teach self‑care techniques and modalities. Complete documentation according to departmental standards; accurately record productivity information; monitor supplies and equipment, notifying appropriate personnel when supplies are low, out on loan, or broken. Utilize time effectively to achieve productivity standards, including using low census time when patient load does not support full productivity. Participate in quality and patient safety initiatives; identify potential areas for improvement and safety hazards, taking appropriate actions. Promote the profession of Respiratory Care; act as a resource, consultant, and mentor to staff within the department and patient care areas. Participate in quality improvement and research activities as part of the Respiratory Care Team to guide development of patient care standards. May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need. May be required to be placed on‑call during a regularly scheduled shift. Minimum Qualifications Graduate of a NBRC‑approved Respiratory Therapist program; education must be from an accredited institution and will be verified. Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT). Current license as Registered Respiratory Therapy in the state of practice. Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers. Specific certifications as required (e.g., PALS, ACLS, NRP). Physical Requirements Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require verbal communication, hearing, and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, especially during emergency situations. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment; frequent computer use and typing for documentation, medication preparation, etc. Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients; bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment; lift items up to heavy weights. Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment. May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time. Location Intermountain Health Lutheran Hospital, Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
