Summary The Director, Occupational Safety and Health will ensure that a safe and healthy environment is maintained for employees, volunteers, clients and visitors at all ASPCA facilities, including mobile clinic facilities and field deployments, to ensure that all employees at the ASPCA can safely and confidently work achieve the ASPCA mission and serve the animals in our care. Who We Are The ASPCA’s Legal Department helps the ASPCA to achieve its organizational goals of preventing animal cruelty by assessing and managing risk. The Legal Department prioritizes respect for our internal clients, business partners, colleagues and others; excellence in the work that we perform and the advice that we provide; and active engagement in the life‑saving work of the ASPCA by showing up for our colleagues, clients, and constituents. What You’ll Do The Director, Occupational Safety and Health is responsible for leading the development, implementation and continuous improvement of ASPCA’s occupational health and safety strategy across all facilities, mobile clinics and field deployments. This role ensures compliance with federal, state and local workplace health and safety regulations while working to identify potential health and safety risks, to provide innovative approaches and systems that create a safe and healthy environment and strengthen a culture of safety across the ASPCA. Director, Occupational Safety and Health reports directly to the Vice President, Safety and has no direct reports. Where and When You’ll Work This remote-based position (which requires travel, as described below) is open to all eligible candidates based within the United States. Ability and willingness to travel up to 30% annually, as needed, such that you can visit each ASPCA facility at least once during each calendar year and more, as needed. Periodically serve as a weekend on‑call member of the Safety Team in rotation with other members. What You’ll Get Compensation The target hiring range is based on where the employee works, which for remote roles is the employee’s primary location of residence, and its respective cost of labor. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary ranges for this role are set forth below and may be modified in the future. Responsibilities Planning and Guidance on Occupational Health and Safety Provide organization‑wide guidance to ensure health and safety of ASPCA employees, visitors, clients and others accessing our services at ASPCA facilities, mobile clinics and field deployments. Conduct worksite assessments to determine occupational risks and spearhead the development of appropriate plans for compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations for workplace health and safety, including OSHA and Cal‑OSHA, working closely with site‑level teams and program departments to find compliant solutions that work well in practice. Coordinate organizational response to emerging workplace health and safety risks. Draft, revise and maintain protocols to ensure regulatory compliance and effective risk management of health and safety issues. Assist with the investigation of and help mitigate workplace accidents or safety incidents. Coordinate with ASPCA colleagues and teams to ensure the collection of all necessary information for, and to draft reports and responses to, federal, state and local compliance audits or inquiries on occupational safety and health. Training and Communication Create, update and conduct organization‑wide training on occupational safety and health in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Effectively communicate to achieve and maintain compliance and enhance an organizational culture of health and safety. Orchestrate development and dissemination on occupational health and safety practices and protocols in conjunction with ASPCA colleagues and teams. Qualifications Strong knowledge of existing governing laws and regulations, including The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), State of California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal‑OSHA), and emerging guidance promulgated by federal and state agencies regarding workplace health and safety required. Experience working within OSHA frameworks preferred. Proven ability to develop, implement and continuously improve occupational health and safety programs across multi‑site operations. Ability to design and deliver organization‑wide occupational health and safety training programs. Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly to diverse audiences. Ability to manage projects, including demonstrated reliability, follow‑through, meeting deadlines, time management, and managing multiple priorities. Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to collaborate cross‑departmentally and cross‑functionally. Ability to exemplify ASPCA’s core values and behavioral competencies. Education and Work Experience Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience required. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certification required. 4 years of professional level occupational health and safety experience required. Experience developing and maintaining safety management systems and compliance documentation required. Experience conducting worksite assessments to determine occupational risks required. Experience drafting protocols preferred. Experience developing and presenting training sessions to be delivered in‑person and virtually, preferred. Experience partnering with other teams within an organization (e.g. Legal, Human Resources, Facilities and operational teams) on safety and safety‑related issues preferred.
