Registered Nurse OR

Overview The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to patients in compliance with recognized Standards of Practice, State Practice Act Standards, and organization protocols, policies, procedures, and guidelines. Supervises and directs patient care in a single operating room. As a representative of this facility, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors have a direct effect on the center's image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, physicians, referral sources, guests, visitors, volunteer workers, co-workers, supervisors, vendors, etc. must be friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional to promote teamwork and positive relations consistent with the center's standards and guidelines. Responsibilities Assess patient and family needs in order to provide quality care to assigned patients. Organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management. Consider cost containment by using supplies economically and ensuring efficient turnover time. Prepare the operating room according to requirements of the patient/procedure to be performed. Implement the plan of care safely and effectively and provide a safe environment, including: positioning the patient safely, padding bony prominences, ensuring respiratory and circulatory protection, ensuring correct prepping and draping procedures, and conducting the “time out” process prior to incision to ensure correct patient, correct procedures, and correct surgical site. Ensure asepsis during all procedures. Open and present sterile items to sterile fields aseptically; ensure supplies are not expired. Account for all sponges, needles, and sharps during and after the procedures and document appropriately, including promoting positive communication with all team members. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and assist anesthesia personnel by supporting patients during administration of anesthesia. Attend all required safety training programs and describe responsibilities related to general safety and job-related hazards. Follow the center exposure control plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens. Work variable hours and be flexible to meet the needs of the center’s daily surgery schedule. Maintain current knowledge, certification, and licensure. Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Other duties as assigned. Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required. Certifications/Licensure Valid State of Illinois Registered Nurse license is required. BLS and ALS certifications are required. PALS certification preferred. Experience A minimum of two (2) years experience in orthopedic surgery is required. Ambulatory surgery center experience preferred. Technical Skills Knowledge in medical terminology preferred. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute ratio, rate, and percent. Soft Skills Ability to communicate well and effectively present information to patients, families, co-workers, etc. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to communicate in verbal and written methods. Ability to set priorities. Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, etc. Superior interpersonal skills Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to noise level in the work environment which is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to communicable diseases transmitted by patients and co-workers. Base salary offers for this position may vary based on factors such as location, skills and relevant experience.
