Externship Experience An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers veterinary students the unique opportunity to learn day‑to‑day operations of a practice and gain hands‑on clinical experience. NVA hospitals share a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on exceptional service to animals and their owners. Externships typically last from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules, and are open to all veterinary students regardless of class year. Responsibilities Collaborate closely with a supervising veterinarian to gather patient histories, perform physical examinations, and establish treatment plans. Assist with diagnostics, dentistry services, and observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures. Participate in medical management of patients and practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Qualifications Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education. All veterinary students are encouraged to participate, regardless of class year. Travel/Living Expense Stipend Eligible veterinary students receive a travel or living expense stipend of $500.
