Writer, Direct Mail

The Writer role creates, implements, and oversees effective internal and external communication strategies, policies, practices, and projects that effectively describe and promote the organization and its global mission. This position requires an active commitment to the mission, values, and doctrinal stance of MAF. In the course of performing job duties, the employee will act in a manner that is Christ-honoring as well as Christlike, demonstrating a personal Christian faith and witness in all interpersonal interactions. 20% Communication Project Management and Implementation Writes and disseminates employee newsletters. Assists in communication regarding disaster response projects. Assists in writing and distributing internal announcements. Assists with public and media relations, e.g., writing and disseminating news releases, arranging interviews, and responding to media inquiries. Assists the Director of Creative Services in developing, maintaining, and implementing clear policies to guide MAF internal and external communication. Participates in annual planning and theme discussion meetings. Develops creative ideas and themes for direct mail projects. Works with resource coordinator to collect stories, photos, and quotes from field staff for use in direct mail and other projects. Conducts interviews, as necessary. Obtains appropriate permissions to use materials. Writes all copy, including all versions, for each direct mail project. Works through any copy edits needed after internal review. Proofreads multiple versions of each direct mail project. Reviews input from external proofreaders. 25% Serves as a communication resource to MAF staff and departments. 10% Manages MAF's Alumni Relations activities. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or a related field required, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 4 years experience in corporate communication, public relations, marketing, or journalism required. 4 years writing press releases, news stories, and/or marketing materials required. 3 years writing direct mail appeals required. 1 year media relations experience required. 1 year project management experience required. 1 year experience with electronic newsletter and email creation preferred. Skills Advanced knowledge/understanding of effective internal and external corporate communication principles. Advanced skill in writing and editing press releases, news stories, and/or marketing materials. Advanced knowledge/understanding of grammar, sentence structure, and spelling. Advanced skill in writing fundraising appeals. Advanced ability in discretion and good judgement. Intermediate ability in media relations and pitching stories. Intermediate ability in interpersonal skills with ability to develop contacts, provide feedback, and communicate strategy. Intermediate knowledge/understanding of marketing and fundraising, including direct mail marketing. Intermediate ability in using MS Office Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint. Basic skill in electronic newsletter and HTML email creation is helpful. Basic knowledge/understanding of graphic design principles and the print production process is helpful. Travel Requirements Infrequent domestic travel to events, meetings, or conferences. Rare international travel to visit MAF sites.
