Must complete laboratory training courses for phlebotomists or complete an approved training course. Certification by a nationally recognized agency is desirable. Language Skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedures manuals. Ability to speak effectively to customers and/or employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Reasoning Ability Ability to applycommon sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to corrosive chemicals, infectious agents, handling glassware, needles and handling unpleasant specimens such as stool and urine. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and risk of radiation. Tasks that are routinely performed may involve possible contact with blood and other body fluid and cleaning up of contaminated areas, handling waste, specimen accessioning, specimen collection, specimen handling/transport, specimen shipping, venipuncture, skin puncture, and making blood smears. Principal Responsibilities Exercising concern for the patient's welfare is paramount. Collects blood specimens from hospital inpatients and outpatients. Collects other typesof specimens frompatients.
