Academic Advisor

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is seeking a dynamic professional to serve as an Academic Advisor within the Academic Success Center to facilitate professional academic advising services to first year students. The Academic Success Center is part of the division of Student Success.

The Academic Success Center's Academic Advisors take a holistic approach in the responsibilities of: providing academic and career planning to first year students, coaching students on high impact academic success practices, informing students of degree requirements and supporting their transition into college. The advisor will support the ASC's and University's efforts to increase the persistence and graduation rates of the undergraduate student by fostering retention of students through mentoring, advising, and other support programs.

Duties include:

• Advise assigned students on progression requirements and selection of courses.
• Review and interpret placement and other standardized test scores, transcripts, courses enrollment and other transfer work.
• Maintain systematic and frequent contact with advisees.
• Monitor, identify, and support students with academic difficulties.
• Refer students to appropriate support services such as counseling, financial aid, etc. and encourage student participation in beyond the classroom activities.
• Collaborate with academic college and departmental representatives to ensure understanding of all degree programs responsible for advising.
• Provide an open and welcoming atmosphere that respects the unique and diverse background of each student.
• Support students through the development of career goals.
• Maintain thorough knowledge of major-specific curriculum and co-curricular activities.
• Serve on appropriate department, college and/or campus advisory committees.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications include a Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning and minimum of two years of work experience in higher education, preferably in academic advising or counseling. Preferred qualifications include ability to work as part of a mutually dependent and supportive team, demonstrated commitment to diversity and to supporting the academic success of all students, excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, ability to remain calm under pressure and to adapt quickly to change, and working knowledge of ERP system (i.e. Banner) or demonstrated ability to learn and utilize student data management system.
