Assistant Principal

Primary Purpose:


To assist the school principal in the overall administration of the instructional program and campus level operations; To work in concert with the principal and staff to identify and achieve specific instructional goals, to develop and maintain a program for personal and staff professional growth, cooperation and self-renewal that stimulates creativity and innovation.


Qualifications:


Education/Certification:

  • Master's Degree
  • Texas Assistant Principal or other appropriate Texas certificate
  • Certified Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (TTESS) appraiser
  • Student restraint and de-escalation training and valid certification required
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate
Experience:


At least three years successful experience as a classroom teacher


Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Participates in collaborative processes to develop campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members
  • Assists principal in maintaining and using information systems to maintain records to track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators
  • Participates in the development and evaluation of the educational programs
  • Encourages and supports the development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate
  • Promotes the use of technology in the teaching/learning process
  • Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local Board of Trustees
  • Supervises operations in the absence of the regular principal
  • Helps plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules
  • Supervise the reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with the attendance clerk on follow-up investigations
  • Assists with developing budgets based upon documented program needs, estimated enrollment, personnel, and other fiscal needs
  • Coordinates transportation, custodial, and other support services
  • Requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment; check inventory, maintain records, and verify receipts for materials
  • Assists with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities
  • Ensures that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods
  • Ensures that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable
  • Conducts conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers
  • Helps to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior
  • Coordinates and supervises student activities as assigned by the principal
  • Maintains accurate individual student disciplinary records
  • Observes employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences. Serves as second appraiser for the designated teacher appraisal system
  • Confers with staff members regarding their professional growth and leadership skills; works jointly with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals
  • Identifies, provides, and/or encourages participation in available in-service training options to address the goals identified through the growth planning process
  • Assists the principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff
  • Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities
  • Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators
  • Uses information provided through the District appraisal process to improve performance
  • Uses appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement
  • Projects a positive image to the community
  • Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned, including extra-curricular activities after school hours
  • Annually establishes and meets performance goals
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible
  • Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations
  • Adhere to the district's safety policies and procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
  • Other duties as assigned
