Position Overview We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Medical Director to lead our clinical team. You’ll deliver top‑tier veterinary care in a diverse practice setting, collaborate with experienced colleagues, and contribute to our culture of integrity, service, and compassion. Location Animal General in Avon is a well‑established, full‑service veterinary hospital serving the Farmington Valley and greater Hartford region. We provide compassionate, high‑quality care to dogs and cats across all life stages—from preventative medicine and dentistry to soft‑tissue surgery, internal medicine, diagnostics, and urgent‑care services. Our facility features an in‑house diagnostic laboratory, surgical suites, online appointment booking, and a client‑focused environment committed to strong relationships with pets and their people. Key Responsibilities Provide high‑quality veterinary medicine and surgery to dogs and cats (routine exams, preventive care, dental, internal medicine, soft‑tissue surgery). Participate in diagnostics using our in‑house lab and imaging capabilities. Educate clients and build long‑term relationships. Collaborate with our team across departments to deliver seamless patient care. For the Medical Director track: leadership in clinical protocols, mentoring colleagues, driving hospital initiatives and growth. Comprehensive patient exams and medical work‑ups. Client communication and education. Performing diagnostic procedures and surgery. Maintaining accurate medical records. Pharmacy duties such as prescribing medications and following controlled substance protocols. Promote teamwork and staff efficiency. Work with the Hospital Manager on weekly priorities and expectations. Evaluate and monitor protocols for the daily running of the hospital from intake to discharge. Monitor cases in the hospital and attend daily rounds when possible. Participate in practice management updates and training at all levels. Perform other duties as assigned by Management. Qualifications (Required) Veterinarian degree (DVM or VMD) from an accredited college or university. Current State Veterinary License. DEA registration must be obtained and maintained. 1+ years of experience in a veterinary practice. Strong diagnostic and clinical skills. Excellent surgical and dental skills. Ability to work well in a team‑oriented environment. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Commitment to providing compassionate and high‑quality veterinary care. Client communication skills, including eliciting information, establishing rapport, and offering explanations to pet owners. Display confidence and reassurance when dealing with pets experiencing severe stress, illness, or pain. Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds; may include some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Ability to perform moderately physically demanding work periodically. Preferred Skills (Nice to Have) Demonstrate clinical knowledge and skill in examining and assessing animals, including cardiovascular, respiratory, orthopedic, neurological and other necessary examinations. Diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment. Problem‑solving: develop solutions to challenges relating to the management of a high‑quality veterinary hospital. Effective communication of diagnostic and therapeutic options to clients and internal medical staff. Professionalism: provide and receive constructive criticism, suggestions, and feedback within a high‑quality, professional veterinary team. Business acumen: understand the management and finances of the veterinary hospital practice. Ethics: knowledge and understanding of ethical principles that guide decisions affecting patients. Commitment to continuing education: utilize available resources of continuing education and facilitate learning of others.
