Research Health Science Specialist

This position serves as Without Compensation Research Health Science Specialist within the Office of Research and Development (ORD). Qualifications To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 07/13/2026. Experience: You must possess general experience such as measuring small metabolites and environmental chemicals, preparing samples, managing liquid and gas chromatography coupled multistage/high resolution mass spectrometer systems, and utilizing systems and control software specific to instruments manufactured by AB Sciex and Thermo Fisher Scientific. Education: Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field – health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position; degree must be from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Volunteer Experience: Applicants may include volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) or other organizations; such experience will be credited toward qualification. Physical Requirements: The work is predominantly sedentary. The employee typically sits comfortably to do the work, but there will be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items of moderate weight such as large binders, banker-style file boxes, meeting materials, papers, books or small parts. Hand and eye coordination for delicate testing procedures may be the only special physical demand required to perform the work. Duties Providing operational support and coordination for the implementation of VA research and quality improvement projects as directed. Handling project questions and problems independently. Managing timelines and deliverables for successful completion of the projects. Measurements of small molecule metabolites and environmental chemicals to support population health research with veterans and military health system cohorts. Manipulation of liquid and gas chromatography coupled multistage/high resolution mass spectrometer systems: preparing samples, data acquisition, data processing and reporting.
