Position Summary
The Substitute Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors throughout the school district. This position performs routine custodial duties, assists with event setup and cleanup, and responds to building maintenance needs as assigned. The Substitute Custodian works on an as-needed basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, locker rooms, restrooms, gymnasiums, and other district facilities to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, wax, and buff floors as needed.
- Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
- Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste according to district procedures.
- Clean, sanitize, and restock restroom facilities with necessary supplies.
- Monitor building conditions and promptly report maintenance issues, safety hazards, vandalism, or security concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of furniture, equipment, and materials for school events, athletic activities, meetings, and community functions.
- Operate custodial equipment and tools safely and efficiently, including vacuums, floor scrubbers, and other cleaning equipment.
- Follow established safety procedures when handling cleaning chemicals and materials, including maintaining compliance with Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements.
- Maintain exterior entrances, sidewalks, and other assigned areas by removing snow, ice, debris, and litter as needed.
- Secure assigned areas by locking doors, turning off lights, and ensuring buildings are properly secured when required.
- Respond to custodial emergencies such as spills, leaks, weather-related issues, or other situations requiring immediate attention.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and comply with all Michigan school employment requirements.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming school environment.
- Previous custodial, janitorial, facilities, maintenance, or related experience.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, custodial equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
- Experience working in a school or public facility environment.
- Familiarity with workplace safety procedures, including the safe handling of cleaning products and equipment.
- Basic knowledge of building systems and the ability to identify and report maintenance concerns.
- Ability to assist with event setup, furniture movement, and minor maintenance tasks as assigned.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
