Van Driver (Substitute)

Substitute Van DriverQualifications: Must be 21 years of age, physically capable of performing a daily pre-trip inspection, and able to wear a seat belt. Must meet physical criteria established by the Ohio Department of Education, complete training as per Administrative Code, hold a current driver's license, and demonstrate the ability to cope with stressful situations. Must have a satisfactory work history and driving record, an understanding of the role of pupil transportation, and pass drug screens. Reports to the Transportation Coordinator and supervises children on the bus.Position Goal: To provide safe and efficient transportation of students.Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated by the Transportation Coordinator, with annual and triennial reviews.Performance Criteria:Cleans the van and acquires necessary repairs and service.Completes mandated pre-trip inspection before driving each day.Complies with Ohio laws, ODE, and district policies related to drug/alcohol testing.Obeys all Ohio and local traffic laws, ODE, and district policies and procedures.Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.Keeps to assigned schedule and route.Directly supervises students in van at all times.Maintains firm, fair, and consistent discipline when students are on the bus.Enforces school van regulations as outlined in the handbook and bus rules document.Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority in writing.Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops.Transports only authorized students.Completes and turns in route timing sheets, time sheets, and other reports/forms as required.Notifies the proper authorities in case of mechanical failure or delay in arrival.Notifies the proper authority in the event of hazardous road conditions.Reports all accidents and completes required accident reports within 24 hours.Attends all safety workshops and meetings as required by district administration.Keeps van fueled at all times and uses established fueling procedures.Uses proper grammar and correct spelling in using disciplinary forms and other reports.Uses the bus radio in a professional manner and only for school/safety related business.Reports all on duty and off duty violations of traffic laws to supervisor before returning to work.Maintains mature and proper behavior while on duty and on school property.Must carry license at all times when on duty, according to Ohio law.Follows Ohio law and district policy in regard to use of cell phones and other electronic devices.Idles only as needed.Personal Qualities: Maintains well-groomed appearance, displays a positive and friendly attitude, is punctual and dependable, shows an interest in the job, remains flexible and calm under stress, demonstrates an ability to make sound decisions, maintains a good attendance record, and follows district and departmental policies for requesting days/time off.Human Relations: Communicates all legitimate concerns directly to the Transportation Coordinator, cooperates with the Transportation Coordinator and drivers, uses discretion in school and job related matters, is diplomatic when dealing with parents, contacts parents and attempts to work out problems, and maintains a good rapport with the students.School-Community Relations: Communicates a positive image of the school district, maintains the confidentiality of school and department related issues, defuses rumors with regard to school matters among drivers and/or in the community.Other: Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Transportation Coordinator, including field trips.
