Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Surgical Acute Med Surg Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year(s) License: Active Illinois license or confirmation of application process Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Post-op care of patients Critical thinking skills Good bedside manner Team player Description: The unit has 63 beds, consisting of 49 private and 9 observation beds. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5 RNs during the day and 5-6 RNs at night. Ratios may increase to 1:6 on days and 1:7 on nights if absolutely needed. Common types of patients include post-operative surgical, trauma, and overflow medical cases. Duties include dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, and TPN management. RNs are not required to titrate drips, except for Heparin. Charge Nurses do not take patient assignments and are pre-assigned on each shift. House Supervisors are available 24/7. Patient Care Technicians assist with 7-10 patients during the day and 10-15 patients at night. Technicians' duties include taking vitals, performing accu checks, aiding with ADLs, turning, and ambulation. Respiratory Therapists manage nebulizers, while RNs manage inhalers and can place patients on CPAP. Telemetry monitoring is conducted by central station technicians; bedside RNs do not read strips. Shifts are from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM for days and from 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM for nights. Block scheduling may be considered if approved at the time of contract. Every other weekend, Saturday and Sunday, is required for scheduling. Holiday rotation is required every other holiday. Traveling RNs are the first to float to other units and will float only to units with the same level of experience. If an ICU RN floats to a general unit, they will take on a team of 3 patients. Scrubs of any color are permitted, and departmental orientation will include training with a preceptor.
