Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor in the Facilities Services Maintenance Department, the Painter is a skilled trades position supporting the painting needs of the University of California, Riverside campus. The painter is responsible for coordinating and communicating with campus customers to understand their needs and fulfill work order requests for painting services. Painting services may occur indoors, outdoors, in and on structures, street postings, signs, asphalt, and curbs. This position also coordinates with other skilled trades in preparing the campus' new builds for launch and occupancy.

Degree - Requirement

High School Diploma. - Preferred

Experience - Requirement

4 years of journey-level experience in the painting skilled trade related to maintenance repair and construction. - Required

Experience operating shop equipment, power and hand tools common to the skilled trade, including but not limited to: rollers, brushes, airless and conventional sprayers, hammers, screwdrivers, sanders, scrapers, grinders, wall texturing machines, pressure washers, etc. - Required

Experience with proper usage of colorants, paints, primers, solvents, patching compounds, sealers, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, and thinners. - Preferred

Experience in safe and proper procedures with removal/abatement of lead based paint. - Preferred

License - Requirement

Valid Driver License - Required

Certification - Requirement

Lead abatement certification. - Preferred

Certification of training in fork lifts, lifts, and/or boom truck operations. - Preferred

Completion of a certified apprenticeship program. - Preferred

Special Condition - Requirement

Hired candidate must successfully pass a background check prior to appointment start date. - Required

Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program. - Required

Shift Work (hours outside standard Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM work hours). - Required

Must wear University issued ID badge and uniform. - Required

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge and ability to properly and safely work with colorants, paints, primers, solvents, patching compounds, sealers, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, and thinners.

Ability to estimate time, methods and materials needed from construction documents. Able to read and understand documents such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blue prints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams.

Ability and willingness to work weekends and holidays, occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime, emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed.

Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.

Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, general public, and provide exceptional customer service.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, record information accurately, effectively communicate, and understand safety regulations and hazards.

Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, man-lifts, and boom trucks at varying heights of up to 25 feet above grade; lift up to 75 pounds; perform repetitive lifting, bending, stooping, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling and reaching. Able to lift, load, carry, move and manipulate various building materials; work in areas where noise levels may exceed 90 dB.

Ability to withstand frequent exposure to extreme temperature conditions up to 125 degrees F (boiler rooms, steam pits, outdoor weather, etc.). Able to work in confined and dusty spaces and wear respirator or other required safety gear. Able to work outdoors in extreme and inclement weather conditions ranging from high heat with humidity, to freezing, rainy, and windy conditions. Able to work around and be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells, dangerous and/or hazardous substances. Ability to follow safety precautions and utilize appropriate safety devices, equipment and gear to safely perform duties with exposure to environmental requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge and ability to properly and safely apply proper procedures with removal/abatement of lead based paint.

Knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected.

Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Design Cad 2, etc.).

Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and systems.

Ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests along with choose the proper materials or equipment to accomplish work in the most expeditious and safe manner.

Key Responsibilities

Painting Maintenance & Repair: Prepares various surfaces (wood, metal, plaster, sheet rock, Vaughn wall, masonry, etc.) for painting including, but not limited to, washing, dewaxing, patching, plastering, caulking, taping, glazing, repairing, sanding and scraping; removes wall hangings, screws, wall anchors, repairs surfaces, removes old paint, fills holes/cracks/joints with putty, plaster and other fillers, in preparation of painting. Removes and installs wall plates, as necessary for the painting. Applies paints, stains, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, other topcoats and finishes with rollers, brushes and sprayers. Etches galvanized metal prior to priming. Performs body work, such as using automotive body fillers on various types of metal desks, cabinets, etc. Applies proper primers and flash bonds for priming metal surfaces. Removes old finishes with paint removers. Patches, sands wood cabinets and furniture. Mixes and blends penetrating lacquers and stains. Sprays lacquers, sanding seal
