Correctional Officer

131 DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

Job Description Oklahoma Department of Corrections is recruiting for Correctional Security Officers for multiple positions located across the State of Oklahoma. Applicants must be willing to attend an 8‑week live‑in academy in Oklahoma City from Sunday 6:00PM through Thursday 6:00PM and return home on the weekends. Academy begins on October12,2026. During the academy lodging and meals are provided. Responsibilities Provide security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities; maintain security of an assigned area or post. Provide security and supervision over inmate work crews, escort inmates to work sites, inventory and control all equipment, weapons, tools and keys. Patrol yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories and work areas on an assigned shift; observe inmate activity and movements; manage inmate conduct, work and discipline. Maintain order and discipline in programs and during meals and recreation periods; inspect living areas, facilities and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials; report incidents. Operate manually or electronically controlled security equipment to maintain controlled movement of inmates, staff and the public. Conduct inmate counts; perform searches of inmates and living quarters for contraband; enforce institutional rules and regulations. Prepare written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status and movement. Participate on escape and apprehension teams; respond to riots and fires. Level Descriptors Correctional Officer (Basic Level) – Employees are assigned as correctional officer cadets and receive formal and on‑the‑job training in security and custody duties and various policies and procedures related to control and management of inmates. After completing statutory training and orientation, they perform routine duties as a first‑level trained security officer and supervise inmates in a wide variety of situations and activities. Corporal (Career Level) – Employees are assigned responsibilities at the full performance level as a correctional security corporal, providing security and control of inmates. Assignments involve maintaining discipline and security among inmates both within and outside the facility and interpreting and executing post orders. Education and Experience Correctional Officer – Statutory requirements: minimum age 20, possession of 30 semester hours from an accredited college or a high school diploma (or GED) plus completion of a trained course approved by the Department within the first six months of employment. Corporal – Must be a qualified Correctional Officer plus 12 months of experience in correctional or security work for a governmental or private corrections agency. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Required knowledge of English usage, basic math, reporting writing, firearms use and care, proper restraint methods, self‑defense methods, discipline objectives for inmates, and psychology of inmate behavior. Ability to evaluate situations, act quickly and effectively in emergencies, follow oral and written instructions, gather and organize facts, complete clear, concise reports, communicate effectively, establish and maintain working relationships, maintain firearms proficiency, and manage conflicts within the inmate population. Special Requirements Successful completion of minimum testing or professional evaluation through Human Capital Management; written evaluations submitted to the Department of Corrections. Pre‑employment and annual physical examination consistent with Department guidelines. Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment. Willingness to work any assigned shift or day of the week and additional shifts as required. Subject to drug testing. May be designated as a peace officer and required to meet additional training, screening, and psychological or physical testing for a basic police course.
