Phlebotomist

Summary Performs a variety of patient services such as phlebotomy, EKG, and DNA collections on a routine and STAT basis, test ordering and clerical duties, and specimen processing including accessioning and preparation for HNL processing facility. Job Duties Perform venipunctures, capillary, point‑of‑care testing, EKG, PKU, DUI, drug screen, and DNA collections for all age groups at Patient Care Service Centers and diagnostic locations. Identify patients prior to specimen collection using defined laboratory protocol and accurately label all specimens. Process, prepare, and store specimens for transport in accordance with the laboratory handbook and departmental SOPs. Clarify orders and pre‑analytical test requirements when necessary. Review requisitions for accuracy before processing and releasing specimens for transport, logging courier calls and coordinating pick‑ups. Enter data into LIS and HIS for all blood and body fluid specimens. Obtain specimens from hospital, outpatient drawing areas, and emergency rooms per written policies. Utilize all appropriate programs, systems, applications, and assigned laboratory equipment. Respond to customer and client inquiries regarding specimen requirements, testing schedules, and departmental operations. Handle a heavy workload, multitask, prioritize, and maintain organization while working alone or extended hours as necessary. Maintain compliance with safety guidelines, PPE use, and sanitization processes. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED and at least 1 year of professional experience, or equivalent. Proficient computer skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent customer service skills. Knowledge of blood‑drawing techniques, specimen requirements, and best practices. Coursework or experience in medical terminology. Good interpersonal skills for effective interaction with patients and providers. Ability to build comprehensive reports and convey information clearly. Knowledge of safety guidelines, PPE usage, and sanitization processes. Successful completion of required training and attainment of proficiency within 90 days. American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification (State of Pennsylvania) within 90 days. Valid driver’s license (State of Pennsylvania). Preferred Qualifications Technical school diploma. Successful completion of an approved phlebotomy training course or at least 1 year of previous phlebotomy experience. Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) – State of Pennsylvania. Phlebotomy Laboratory Technician Certification (PBT) – State of Pennsylvania. ASCP Certification – State of Pennsylvania. Physical Demands Lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs, frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, and potential kneeling, bending, squatting, and performing CPR as required.
