This position is located in Tacoma, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). AGO Investigator/Analyst Salary Range 63 $75,108 - $100,980. The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. Stipends Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend. About the Torts Division The Mission of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is to provide excellent, independent, and ethical legal services to the State of Washington and to protect the rights of its people. This position supports the mission and values of the AGO by conducting investigations of complex, technical, and multi‑issue tort claims and suits with high dollar value or of high‑profile nature brought against all state agencies, boards, and commissions, identifying and providing appropriate legal defense in state and federal courts in the Torts Division in Tacoma. Duties and Essential Functions This role requires strong investigative skills: planning and conducting effective, fair, and confidential interviews; gathering and evaluating information from multiple sources; and documenting findings accurately and thoroughly. The candidate must use tact and professionalism when addressing sensitive matters, ask clear and logically ordered questions, recognize when information is incomplete or requires verification, and organize evidence in a manner that supports sound analysis, discovery, and decision‑making. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, including the ability to prepare clear reports, maintain logs and case documentation, communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and credibly present findings in court or administrative hearings. The position also demands excellent judgment, workload management, and interpersonal skills. The candidate must prioritize and manage multiple cases under time‑sensitive conditions, analyze complex information, apply basic principles of Washington tort law, and make decisions consistent with agency policy and legal standards. Success requires professionalism, emotional intelligence, respect for confidentiality and diversity, and the ability to build constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders while maintaining objectivity, accountability, and continuous learning. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of experience conducting investigations, including the authority to independently plan and conduct investigations in civil or criminal cases. Additional qualifying investigative experience may substitute for education on a year‑for‑year basis. Skills & Abilities The preferred candidate will possess exceptional written and oral communication skills, demonstrate critical thinking, and have the ability to distill critical points and questions from large and diverse sources of information. Ideal candidates will have significant experience conducting complex investigations.
