Job Title: Electrical Engineer – Utility Joint Use Programs Job Description

This position offers an excellent opportunity for an early-career electrical engineer to join a utility engineering team focused on Joint Use programs for investor-owned utility clients. You will work closely with experienced engineers and designers to evaluate third-party attachments on utility poles, perform make-ready engineering analyses, ensure compliance with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and contribute to utility infrastructure modernization initiatives. The role provides hands-on experience in electric distribution systems, utility pole engineering, and telecommunications attachment reviews, while offering a clear path for professional growth within utility and power delivery engineering.

Responsibilities

• Support Joint Use engineering projects for electric utility clients by contributing to the analysis, design, and documentation of utility pole and distribution system work.
• Review pole attachment applications submitted by telecommunications, cable, broadband, and wireless providers to assess feasibility and compliance with standards.
• Perform engineering evaluations of utility poles to determine structural capacity, loading conditions, and adherence to applicable codes and utility requirements.
• Assist with make-ready engineering designs and recommendations to ensure that existing and proposed attachments can be safely and reliably accommodated.
• Analyze pole loading, clearances, and attachment configurations to identify necessary modifications and to maintain safe operating conditions.
• Verify compliance with National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) standards and utility construction requirements for all proposed and existing attachments.
• Utilize utility engineering software and internal design tools to perform pole analyses and develop technically sound engineering solutions.
• Review field survey data, pole inspection reports, and as-built records to support accurate engineering assessments and design decisions.
• Develop engineering packages, including sketches, calculations, reports, and supporting documentation, in accordance with project and utility standards.
• Coordinate with project managers, senior engineers, utility personnel, field crews, and third-party attachers to resolve technical issues and move projects forward.
• Support quality assurance and quality control reviews of engineering deliverables to maintain accuracy, consistency, and compliance with standards.
• Maintain project schedules, manage assigned tasks, and ensure timely completion of work in alignment with project milestones and client expectations.
• Participate in training programs focused on utility distribution systems, joint use engineering practices, and related technical topics to continually build expertise.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
• Strong academic understanding of electrical power systems and utility infrastructure.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, for data analysis, reporting, and documentation.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, construction standards, and utility records accurately.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills applied to power distribution and structural pole evaluations.
• Effective technical writing skills for preparing engineering reports, calculations, and documentation.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, maintain schedules, and track project deliverables.
• Clear and professional communication skills for collaborating with engineers, project managers, utility staff, and external stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently while actively collaborating within a team-oriented environment.

• Interest in developing expertise in utility pole engineering, electric distribution systems, and telecommunications attachment reviews.
• Desire to gain experience in joint use program administration, make-ready engineering, and NESC compliance reviews.

Work Environment

The role operates in a hybrid work environment that combines remote work-from-home with onsite work at utility locations. You will use utility engineering software, internal design tools, and standard office applications such as Microsoft Excel to perform analyses and prepare documentation. Work typically involves computer-based engineering analysis, review of digital drawings and records, and coordination via virtual and in-person meetings with project teams and utility stakeholders.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of St. Louis, MO.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $38.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
