HOUSING INSPECTOR 4243 (REVISED 03/20/26) (B)

A Annual Salary $114,150 to $127,242 per year. Responsibilities A Housing Inspector is responsible for inspecting residential rental properties to ensure compliance with the State Housing Law, Regulations, and the City of Los Angeles Building Regulations (including the Municipal Code). Duties include assessing habitability, maintenance, sanitation, ventilation, use, and occupancy of properties; investigating code violation complaints; and enforcing compliance through prosecution or administrative abatement. Requirements & Qualifications One year of full‑time paid experience as an Assistant Inspector III or an Inspector Trainee III with the City of Los Angeles. Two years of full‑time paid experience in carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, or heating following a recognized apprenticeship program. Four years of full‑time paid craft experience in carpentry, masonry, heating, electrical, or plumbing. Four years of full‑time paid experience as a building construction superintendent, general contractor, or supervisor of journeyman workers in construction. Two years of full‑time paid experience as a housing, building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or combined inspector for a governmental agency. Two years of full‑time paid experience helping a journeyman in the construction trades. Completion of a certificate in Construction Inspection or Construction Technology. Or possession of at least an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in engineering, construction, design, building inspection technology, architectural drafting, civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering technology. Examination & Selection The selection process consists solely of a multiple‑choice test, weighted 100%. Competencies assessed include Reading Comprehension; Judgment and Decision Making; Attention to Detail; Composure; Customer Service; Written Communication; Safety Focus; and Job Knowledge covering Municipal Code, Housing Code, Electrical/Plumbing/Mechanical Codes, Fire Code, Health and Safety Code, and proper inspection procedures for residential units. Other Important Information A valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California DMV is required. Successful candidates may be required to provide a company automobile for municipal service.
