Director Of Finance & AccountingThe Director of Finance & Accounting provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for all finance, accounting, and financial operations of the organization. This position is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements, effective stewardship of organizational assets, and the development of financial strategies that support the organization's mission, growth, and long-term sustainability.The Director of Finance & Accounting serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and department leaders on financial planning, performance, risk management, and operational decision-making. The role oversees all accounting operations, budgeting and forecasting, financial planning and analysis, grants and restricted fund management, audits, tax and regulatory filings, cash flow management, and internal controls.The Director of Finance & Accounting leads and develops the finance team, drives continuous improvement in financial systems and processes, and fosters a culture of accountability, transparency, collaboration, and service excellence. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that financial resources are managed effectively to advance the organization's strategic priorities and maximize mission impact.Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Leadership & StrategyDevelop and implement financial strategies aligned with the organization's mission and long-term sustainabilityServe as strategic advisor to the CFOO on planning, performance, resource allocation, and risk managementProvide financial analysis and recommendations to support organizational decision-makingMonitor financial performance and identify opportunities for efficiency and revenue enhancementDevelop KPIs and leadership reports that provide clear insight into organizational performanceAccounting & Financial ManagementDirect all accounting operations: general ledger, accounts payable, revenue, payroll, and close processesEnsure timely, accurate financial statements prepared in accordance with GAAPMaintain and improve accounting systems, policies, and proceduresOversee cash flow management, liquidity planning, banking relationships, and reserve managementBudgeting & ForecastingLead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department leadersDevelop financial forecasts, multi-year projections, and scenario modelsMonitor performance against budget and provide variance analysisSupport leadership in evaluating program financial performance and resource allocationGrant & Fund AccountingOversee grant accounting, compliance, reporting, and stewardship of restricted fundsEnsure proper allocation of expenses among programs, grants, and funding sourcesMonitor grant expenditures and ensure compliance with donor and funding requirementsCollaborate with development staff on grant proposals, budgets, and financial reportingProvide leadership with timely analysis of restricted funding and grant utilizationAudit, Compliance & Internal ControlsCoordinate annual financial audits and prepare required schedules and documentationEnsure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations affecting nonprofit organizationsOversee preparation and filing of IRS Form 990 and required regulatory reportsEstablish and continuously improve internal controls, financial policies, and risk management practicesPartner with external auditors, tax advisors, and consultants as neededTeam LeadershipLead, mentor, and develop a team of 3–4 finance and accounting professionalsOversee the full employee performance lifecycle: goal-setting, evaluations, coaching, and developmentManage external financial consultants, auditors, and service providersLead process improvements, system enhancements, and automation to strengthen the finance functionQualifications & CompetenciesEducationBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field requiredCPA designation preferredMaster's degree (MBA, MPA, Accounting, or Finance) preferredExperience7+ years of progressively responsible finance and accounting experience, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and audit management3+ years of leadership experience managing and developing finance teamsDemonstrated experience in nonprofit finance and accounting, including fund accounting and regulatory requirementsExperience overseeing annual audits, IRS Form 990 preparation, and interactions with external auditorsProven experience managing grants, restricted funds, donor reporting, and compliance with federal, state, and private funding requirementsSkills & CompetenciesStrong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, GAAP, and financial reporting requirementsAdvanced proficiency in Sage Intacct, Salesforce, Microsoft Excel, and nonprofit technology platformsDemonstrated ability to partner with executive leadership, board members, auditors, and fundersExcellent written, verbal, and presentation skills; ability to translate complex financial data for non-financial audiencesExceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detailAbility to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive financial information with discretionPhysical DemandsThe physical demands described herein are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.
