Utility Service Worker I

Skill in use of hand and power tool used in water, sewer and sanitary sewer system installation and repair.

Summary:

This is skilled journeymen work involving monitoring the City's potable water distribution and wastewater collection system. Potable water system includes locating and repairing leaks/breaks in mains, valves, service lines, and meters, and construction of system additions. Wastewater collection system includes locating and unplugging of stoppages and repairing of infiltration points. Work also involves construction of system additions in conjunction with lift station and manhole maintenance. Work is performed under the general direction of the Utilities Foreman as well as the Utilities Superintendent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participates in locating valves and leaks in water mains so that repairs can be made.
• Participates in installing and repairing water mains, new service branches, hydrants and water service taps.
• Participates in all phases of the wastewater system, such as constructing, installing a

ing of pumps, lift stations, mains, and laterals.

• Participates in laying pipe and caulking joints.
• Participates in a rotating on call duty in responding to emergency calls after normal duty hours. Maintains a wastewater system that will comply with all plumbing codes and health standards.
• Examines meter installations for leaks and improper registration of consumption, reports faulty meters, and inspects visible plumbing for water leakage.
• Sets and resets meters, repairs leaks in meters, and responds to emergency calls of leaks and breaks.
• Turns water service on and off at individual meters in accordance with authorization of supervisor, or in emergency cases as directed. May be required to read water meters on an assigned route and record readings.
• Repair sewer line stoppages.
• Operates hand and power tools as required to make repairs.
• Assists in the installation inspection and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the extension, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines and related equipment and the ability to extend, repair, and maintain water and sewer lines.
• Knowledge of the tools and equipment required to maintain distribution/collection systems.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the types of work performed and of necessary safety precautions while working in and around equipment and excavations.
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques used in maintaining sanitary sewer systems.
• Ability to make simple mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
• Ability to read meters.
• Ability to locate leaks, stoppages, and malfunctions in water mains and in the sanitary sewer system.
• Ability to establish and maintain good and effective working relationships with officials, employees, and the general public.
• Skill in use of hand and power tools used in water, sewer and sanitary sewer system installation and repair.
  Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED.
• Good health and physical condition to permit walking all day under varying weather conditions.
• Two (2) years experience in the operations, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater collection and distribution systems, lift stations, and meter installation and repair.
• Valid State of Florida CDL, Class B with air brakes or the ability to obtain within one (1) year.
• State of Florida water distribution license or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
• Basic computer knowledge preferred.

A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
