Overview The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey, including planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations. Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Operating Engineer II for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of the College Ave Chief, the engineer maintains, operates, and repairs the stationary steam boilers and auxiliary equipment throughout the Rutgers University College Ave Campus. Responsibilities Responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of boilers, motors, pumps, compressors, valves and other auxiliary equipment. Operate boilers and pressure vessels at maximum efficiency at all times, resulting in minimum energy consumption. Periodically conduct comprehensive tests, take readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperatures, flow and other recordings. Add chemicals to treat steam, water, and fuel in accordance with prescribed requirements. Ensure compliance with all regulations. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Perform variety of maintenance duties as directed by Plant Manager or Senior Shift Supervisor. Perform continual inspections of equipment and systems in area of responsibility and report conditions to Plant Manager and Senior Shift Supervisor. Be available to cover shifts in emergencies. Complete all paperwork in a timely manner. Maintain logs, records, and files of all auxiliary plants. Exchange detailed information with relieving operator. Inspect equipment, use knowledge of plant layout, and learn alternative ways of maintaining continuous operation. Analyze problems, identify causes and effects, and take corrective action as needed. Understand and adhere to Rutgers’ compliance standards as presented in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy. Demonstrate knowledge of computerized monitoring systems and computerized work order systems. Certifications/Licenses Minimum blue seal is required. Valid driver’s license required, and completion of Rutgers Defensive Driving Course. Minimum Education and Experience A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation of steam, hot water boilers, and auxiliary equipment as it relates to the boiler plant operation. Preferred Qualifications Chiller plant experience is also preferred. Computer knowledge of CMMS and plant monitoring is also preferred. Physical Demands and Work Environment This position requires the individual to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk or hear over 2/3 of the time; climb or balance up 2/3 of the time; lift under 1/3 of the time more than 100 pounds, up to 25 pounds 2/3 of the time, and up to 100 pounds 1/3 of the time. The role involves operating in wet or humid conditions, high precarious places, and under extreme heat. It includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock risks, and vibrations.
