JOB PURPOSE:
The Chronic Pain Project i s a small, local nonprofit organization created to make chronic pain visible through art and artwork. The chronic pain experience is captured both verbally and/or visually through sculpture, collage or any preferred visual medium. Global participants meet in regular remote art-making sessions and submit work and interviews about their experience of pain and making artwork.
Participants in the Chronic Pain Project can come from anywhere in the world. They submit pre-existing pieces of artwork or make a special piece for exhibition with CPP. Once the piece is created, artists create a short video to share their experience with exhibit viewers and others on social media.
Fall ‘26 intern will have a main goal of organizing and co-curating a show at the Watzek Library on the Lewis and Clark campus showcasing healthcare provider artwork alongside patient artwork for the first time. They may also assist with various other tasks of running the non-profit, finding exhibit spaces and engaging with artists.
PREREQUISITES FOR ELIGIBILITY
Preference for candidates pursuing coursework in the Health Studies Minor.and enrolled in a Fall ‘26 Internship course for credit towards their HSM.
Preference for candidates who have a Fine Arts practice or are taking Art coursework at LC.
Ability to honor and work with all identities and individuals, particularly those who are underrepresented in the country and/or at Lewis & Clark College.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Co-curate, plan and deliver a Chronic Pain Project gallery wall in the LC Watzek Library during the Fall ‘26 semester, proposed dates October 5-November 5, 2026
Create marketing materials (IG) and marketing flyers for the show.
Plan a small opening event.
Conceive of an audience reflection and reaction component for the gallery wall.
Work with existing CPP interview materials to edit and share guidance for artists and healthcare providers to complete an independent Q&A.
Collaborate with CPP board members and volunteers to develop artist engagement programs and initiatives.
Learn and work within ArtWorkArchive, a gallery and collection management software.
Other tasks as assigned, including social media content creation and newsletter support.
SCHEDULE:
8 hrs week x 12 weeks for a total of 92 paid internship hours.
Work will be primarily remote, with regular hours that work for the candidate's class schedule, ideally in several 3-4 hour blocks of time during each week.
Regular check-ins with both Chronic Pain Project and student supervisor at the Center for Community and Global Health to be set at times that work for all.
Available when possible for in-person workshop support and tabling events as they arise.
RATE OF PAY:
$16.80 / hour Portland Metro Area minimum wage.
WORK STUDY REQUIREMENT:
Federal or LC Work-Study will be given priority, but it is not required to apply.
