Custodian, Day Shift

Job Description

Augustana University is seeking applications for a full-time, year-round custodian position on the day shift, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. While previous experience is beneficial, it is not a requirement for this role.

The custodian plays a vital role in maintaining the campus buildings, contributing to a learning environment that promotes health, a positive attitude, and pride among students, faculty, and staff.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

• Maintenance and Safety: Ensure the university is in good repair, maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly environment. Keep work areas free of hazardous conditions (e.g., grease/oil spills, sawdust, excess supplies).
• Cleaning Schedules and Procedures: Follow daily cleaning schedules and procedures meticulously. Ensure work and assignment areas are clean and that tools, supplies, and equipment are properly stored.
• Supplies and Equipment: Maintain the care and use of supplies and equipment, minimizing waste and misuse.
• Work Area Appearance: Maintain the appearance of work areas.
• Chemical Handling: Use and handle chemicals, compounds, and solvents according to OSHA guidelines, adhering to all established safety procedures and precautions.
• Infection Control: Follow established Infection Control and Universal Precautions practices during housekeeping procedures.
• General Cleaning: Vacuum, dust, and clean glass surfaces.
• Restrooms and Laundries: Clean public restrooms, laundries, and theme houses.
• Supplies Management: Pick up and deliver supplies and materials as needed.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, and accept constructive criticism.
• Ability to interact tactfully with personnel, students, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.

Interacting with students, faculty and leadership with different backgrounds and points of view and a deep appreciation of and respect for academic values and culture must be a top value of the candidate.
