Important Information
- Orientation will be conducted in Houston, TX.
- Candidates should be comfortable traveling to Houston, TX for orientation.
- Monday - Thursday: 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM
- Friday: 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. Key Responsibilities
- Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
- Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
- Demonstrates technique(s) using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understands all physicians' orders.
- Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test orders.
- Checks all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Packages specimens for transport.
- Stores specimen samples according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labels specimens, and follows transport protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attends annual department training.
- Answers telephone calls and reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where employed, as required in some states.
- Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2-4 years of overall experience.
