Medical Laboratory Technician

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs various technical, clerical, and information systems-related procedures in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, specimen procurement, and other laboratory areas as requested on patient specimens, control materials, and proficiency samples. The MLT operates laboratory equipment within established policies to provide timely and accurate test results to healthcare providers. This skilled individual is responsible for performing laboratory tests efficiently and accurately for high-quality patient care. Monitoring quality control procedures and maintaining involvement in laboratory quality improvement programs are also essential responsibilities. The MLT analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results. Entering data from the analysis of medical tests and clinical results into the computer for storage is a key task. The MLT sets up, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment. Working with laboratory equipment, they assist in preparing and analyzing slides and specimens of human blood, tissue, or other cells. The MLT operates, calibrates, and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis, such as chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology. They establish and monitor quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results. Collecting and studying blood samples helps determine the number of cells, their morphology, blood group, blood type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques. The MLT analyzes samples of biological material for chemical content or reactions. They conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, including blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components. MLTs help identify abnormalities in samples, such as malignancies, bacteria, parasites, or genetic abnormalities. They may also assist in blood-typing or other routine blood tests. Providing technical information about test results to healthcare providers, family members, and researchers is an important aspect of the role. Other duties as assigned are expected.

Key Responsibilities:

• Organizing work and managing the use of time to complete technical tasks within realistic time limits
• Controlling laboratory equipment and adjusting instruments to perform laboratory procedures
• Using computers to operate laboratory instruments and calculating, recording, evaluating, and transmitting data
• Analyzing and interpreting laboratory results with considerable judgment across all areas of the laboratory, including hematology, chemistry, special chemistry, serology, blood bank, microbiology, and urinalysis
• Maintaining instruments and the laboratory section as assigned by the Lab Manager, including scheduled maintenance and monitoring consumables
• Performing specimen collection on patients of all age groups, including venipuncture, capillary draws, and instructing others on correct sample collection methods
