Electrical Supervisor

GovernmentJobs.com

The Position

The City of Oakland is an equal opportunity employer that values workforce diversity, inclusion, and equity. Oakland has a long history of activism around issues of justice and equity. Both oppression and this resistance to oppression have shaped the city's historical roots and the lives of its residents to this day. As public servants in one of the most diverse cities in the nation, we strive to develop employees who understand the harm and impacts of systemic inequity to create lasting, meaningful outcomes for everyone. Oakland strives to establish an environment that embraces the richness of culture, community, and individualism of employees. Why join the City of Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT)? The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill two (2) Electrical Supervisor vacancies within the Department of Transportation. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated and energetic leader who takes initiative, follows through on assignments and commitments, and ensures work is completed accurately, efficiently, and on time. As an Electrical Supervisor, you will play a key role in keeping our city running smoothly by overseeing a team of Electricians who install and maintain essential infrastructure like traffic signals, streetlights, and other public electrical systems that directly affect residents' daily lives. Join a team that values diversity and fosters an inclusive, collaborative work culture, where everyone is respected and has the chance to contribute. Be proud of the work you do. You'll be serving the Oakland community by ensuring that public electrical systems are safe, efficient, and reliable—helping to create a better environment for all residents. We are looking for someone who is: Adaptable: You will need to be fluid, respond quickly to unexpected situations, and make sound decisions when circumstances shift. Collaborative: You will be expected to work effectively as part of a team, while supervising and providing direction to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and effectively. Responsive: You will need to promptly address requests from other departments, engineers, and residents, communicate when work cannot be completed immediately, and follow up with updates and results. Organized: You will need to maintain accurate records, ensure required documentation is complete and up to date, and oversee the recordkeeping of others. Tech-Savvy: You will be expected to stay current with new technology, tools, and methods and incorporate them into your work when appropriate. Thorough: You will need to pay close attention to details, stay organized, follow tasks through to completion, and ensure commitments and responsibilities are not left unfinished. What you will typically be responsible for: Coordinating with staff and outside contractors to ensure electrical work is properly planned and completed. Scheduling daily and swing-shift assignments, standby coverage, and after-hours response to ensure adequate staffing. Collaborating with the other supervisors to coordinate work, address challenges, and achieve shared department goals. Assigning work orders and service requests, monitoring progress, and reviewing completed work in Cityworks to ensure requests are properly addressed and documented. Managing employee timecard entries, tracking expenditures, and monitoring the unit's budget and resources. Conducting employee performance reviews, addressing performance concerns, and handling employee relations matters. Ordering and tracking materials, tools, equipment, and other supplies while monitoring inventory levels and assessing future needs. Training and mentoring employees on work procedures, equipment, safety practices, and other skills needed to perform their jobs effectively. A few reasons you might love this job: You will have the opportunity to give back to Oakland residents and make a meaningful difference in the community you serve. You will lead and support a team, work together to accomplish important tasks, and experience the satisfaction of seeing your team's work directly help others. You will enjoy a variety of work environments, with opportunities to balance office and building-based responsibilities with field work when situations require you to be hands-on and involved. A few challenges you might face in this job: You will transition from hands-on electrical work to a supervisory role that requires learning new responsibilities, including managing staff, making decisions, and overseeing work rather than performing the work yourself. You will need to adapt to changing staffing levels, available resources, and priorities, including responding to emergencies and working independently when unexpected situations arise. You will need to troubleshoot complex electrical and traffic signal issues, interpret plans and drawings in relation to actual field conditions, and learn administrative systems such as Oracle and iProcurement. Competencies Required: Analyzing & Interpreting Data: Drawing meaning and conclusions from quantitative or qualitative data Building & Maintaining Relationships: Establishing rapport and maintaining mutually productive relationships Critical Thinking: Analytically and logically evaluating information, propositions, and claims Customer Focus: Attending to the needs and expectations of customers Decision Making: Choosing optimal courses of action in a timely manner Establishing Credibility: Doing what one commits to doing and respecting the confidentiality of information and concerns shared by others. Innovative Problem Solving: Identifying and analyzing problems in order to propose new and better ways of doing things Mathematical Facility: Performing computations and solving mathematical problems Oral Communication: Engaging effectively in dialogue Professional & Technical Expertise: Applying technical subject matter to the job Professional Integrity & Ethics: Displaying honesty, adherence to principles, and personal accountability Teamwork: Collaborating with others to achieve a shared goal Using Technology: Working with electronic hardware and software applications Writing: Communicating effectively in writing

The restricted list will be for full-time, permanent part-time, or part-time City and Port of Oakland employees who maintain employment for the duration of the recruitment and pass all stages of the recruitment process. (Note: Certification must demonstrate successful completion of an electrical apprenticeship program or recognition as a Journeyman Electrician by a state licensing authority.) Successful incumbents in this position are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the performance of assigned duties. Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties. Supplemental Information

The Recruitment Process: The City of Oakland works with a Civil Service system. Applicants apply online, and HR staff reviews their experience, education, and training listed on the application against the "minimum qualifications" listed for each position. Candidates who demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualification requirements are then invited to participate in an assessment process (or testing) to measure their knowledge, skills, and abilities in job-related areas. Candidates who do not demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualification requirements will have an opportunity to request a final review. Candidates must request a final review within 5 business days of being notified that they did not meet the minimum qualifications. In the final review, candidates may clarify information already provided on their application. No additional work history, education, or certifications will be accepted. Any decisions made during this review process will be final. For this recruitment, all qualified applicants will be invited to the structured interview (sometimes referred to as an Oral Exam) (weighted 100%), which will be evaluated and rated by subject matter experts. The structured interview will be conducted as a one-way video interview, where you will record your responses to a set of questions. You will have 7 days from the time you receive the interview link to complete and submit your video responses. The tentative date of the structured interview is the week of September 14, 2026. Candidates requesting reasonable accommodations for the examination process must request accommodations no later than one week before they are scheduled to take the exam; otherwise, it may not be possible to arrange accommodations for the selection process. Please complete the Request for Reasonable Accommodation in Testing form by clicking on this link or by copying and pasting the link into your browser to open it: (Download PDF reader). Send the completed form and any supporting documentation to the exam analyst: Alanna Butler, at View email address on click.appcast.io. Candidates who pass each stage in the process will be placed on an eligible list. Some candidates may receive extra points, for example, if you are a Veteran with an honorable discharge, or if you are a current City of Oakland resident. If you're applying to a "restricted" posting and you are eligible as a current City employee, you may also receive additional points for your City service. Extra points are only applied to passing scores, so if you do not pass every element of the testing process, you cannot use extra points to pass. The City of Oakland reserves the right to modify the selection process and date of examination as necessary to conform to administrative or business necessity. The information contained in this announcement is subject to change and does not constitute either an expressed or implied contract. What's in it for you?
