Director Pediatric Respiratory Care - Johns Hopkins Children's Center

Reporting to the Respiratory Care Board of Medical Directors and the Administrator of The Johns Hopkins Children's Center, the Director of Respiratory Care Services provides strategic leadership, direction, and coordination of respiratory care services across the Children’s Center, including the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Acute Care Units, and Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory. This leader is responsible for the development and implementation of innovative respiratory care services and treatment modalities, as well as the clinical operations of blood gas laboratories and Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) within the Children’s Center. The Director ensures compliance with all professional, regulatory, and accreditation standards established by the Respiratory Care Board of Medical Directors, The Joint Commission, National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), American Medical Association (AMA), Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), and the State of Maryland. Additionally, this role oversees the recruitment, training, development, and performance management of respiratory care staff, fostering a culture of clinical excellence, collaboration, and exceptional patient care.

Founded in 1912 as the children’s hospital at Johns Hopkins, Johns Hopkins Children's Center offers one of the most comprehensive pediatric medical programs in the country, with more than 65,000 patient visits and nearly 9,000 admissions each year.
Johns Hopkins Children Center is Maryland’s largest children’s hospital and the only state-designated trauma service and burn unit for pediatric patients. It has recognized centers of excellence in dozens of pediatric subspecialties, including allergy, cardiology, cystic fibrosis, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, pulmonary and transplant.
Experience and Requirements:
Education
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. Graduation from a Respiratory Therapy Program approved by the Joint Review Committee for Respiratory Therapy Education (JRCRTE) is required.
Knowledge
Thorough knowledge and understanding of respiratory care equipment, techniques, and physiology required.
Skills
Strong analytical and organizational skills required to develop and implement complex programs, provide technical expertise, meet staffing and budgetary objectives, interpret professional standards, ensure regulatory compliance, support research initiatives, and evaluate employee and program performance.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required to effectively collaborate with respiratory therapy staff, physicians, hospital personnel, and external stakeholders while addressing issues and concerns related to Respiratory Care services.
Licensure/Certification
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required
- Maryland Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
Experience
Seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in an intensive care setting following completion of a JRCRTE-approved Respiratory Care Practitioner Program. Experience in pediatric and neonatal respiratory care, ECMO, and general respiratory care required, with a minimum of three to five years of leadership or supervisory experience.

Salary Range: Minimum 155,397.00/annually - Maximum 183,122.00/annually. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
