Industrial Hygienist

Industrial Hygienist Location: Jamaica Plain, MA campus of the VA Boston Healthcare System. Full‑time at 40 hours per week. Job Summary The Industrial Hygienist position is located in the Facilities Management Service of the VA Boston Healthcare System. The role performs duties in an Industrial Hygiene program to assess work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers. Major Duties Determine measurements to be made and methods to be used; calibrate and adapt equipment such as spectrophotometers, pH meters, and gas chromatographic apparatus. Conduct surveys to identify and evaluate health hazards and potential health hazards. Perform analysis using standard methods to determine the nature and degree of toxic material present in samples, body fluids, and industrial products. Consult and advise occupational health personnel on matters of epidemiology relative to health hazards in the work area. Inspect the medical center to identify potential occupational health hazards and the need for further investigations. Present conclusions and recommendations to management and health officials through data reports, presentations, and written reports. Receive and dispose of hazardous wastes and maintain records in accordance with EPA standards, state law, and VA regulations. Evaluate exposures and advise on control measures and changes in work procedures to comply with health requirements. Review building surveys and historical sampling records to identify hazardous building materials. Prepare comprehensive and legally sufficient written reports of all monitoring activities. Ensure proper documentation of employee exposures in medical records and interpret results for potential health impairment. Work Schedule Full time, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Telework is available on an ad‑hoc basis. Physical Requirements Walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, and bending for long periods; moderate lifting and carrying of equipment; use of personal protective devices; work in hazardous and confined spaces; good vision and hearing; emotional and mental stability required. Requirements U.S. Citizen or eligible national must apply. Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959. Driver’s license or state‑issued identification card must be REAL ID compliant. Seasonal influenza vaccination required. Probationary period of 1 year subject to evaluation of performance, conduct, and public interest. Education & Qualifications Recognized U.S. Department of Education degrees from accredited institutions are required. Foreign qualifications must be verified with a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency and transcript. Benefits The position is a Bargaining Unit position covered by locality‑based comparability pay.
