Police Officer Recruit

Overview Join the City of Mesa Police Department as a Police Officer Recruit. Eligible applicants receive a hiring bonus and additional incentives upon completion of the Field Training Officer Program. The bonus includes $1,750 paid after 30 days of hire (or upon promotion to the recruit classification) and another $1,750 paid upon completion of the FTO program. Recruits with a Bachelor’s degree receive an additional $500 , and those with a Master’s degree receive $1,000 after completing the program. Responsibilities A Police Officer Recruit attends the Mesa Police Department Academy to learn and perform the duties of an entry‑level Arizona peace officer, which include: Interacting with a culturally and socially diverse population Employing discretion in solving problems Maintaining public order and preventing crime Enforcing laws and ordinances Conducting investigations, making arrests, issuing summonses/citations and warnings, and assisting the public Performing patrol activities in a designated area of the City after successful completion of academy and field training Working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays while exercising independent judgment without direct supervision Physical Fitness Requirements The Cooper’s Test is used during the fitness portion of the recruitment process. The scoring matrix includes: Push‑ups – 20 minimum Sit‑ups – 30 minimum 1.5‑mile run – 15 minutes maximum Minimum Qualifications High‑school graduation or GED At least 21 years of age by the time of graduation from the Police Academy Vision acceptable per Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) requirements (details omitted) Valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire or promotion date U.S. citizenship Special Requirements Completion of a background investigation and polygraph Medical evaluation and certification to wear a tight‑fitting respirator (CFR 1910.134) Pre‑employment medical physical, psychological test battery, and drug screening Pre‑employment/pre‑placement and random alcohol, drug, and controlled‑substance testing Preferred Qualifications Completion of college‑level courses in criminal justice.
