School Bus Driver

Reports To: Driver Personnel Manager

Duty Days: 178 days + additional training days as needed

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: A05

Qualifications:

College hours, high school diploma or GED (preferred)

Must be 18 years of age or older

Acceptable driving record as defined by TxDPS and Katy ISD

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements

School Bus Driver Certification or able to obtain with six months of hire date

Katy ISD School Bus Training Program completion or will complete within first month of employment

Pass annual physical in accordance with state law

Negative result on drug and/or alcohol tests administered as pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and district policy

Able to communicate in English in both written and oral

Able to read and interpret maps and routes

Able to climb in and out of all school bus emergency exits

Able to work productively without continual supervision

Primary Purpose:

Safely drive students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Transportation Department. Safely transport students and staff to and from district sanctioned activities. Always act in the best interest of the district, the students and the community.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Operate any Katy ISD school bus and related equipment in a safe and efficient manner while following all traffic laws, district policies, district regulations and Transportation Department regulations.

Follow guidance of the dispatcher and request help from dispatch when necessary.

Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any mechanical problems, damage or concerns

Report involvement in any accident or incident in a timely manner.

Provide written/oral reports for discipline, routing and state reports, as required.

Maintain effective student management.

Load and unload students from the bus following appropriate guidelines.

Perform emergency evacuation of students, if needed, to include the need to walk to the rear of the bus, exit through the rear door, assist and/or lift students.

Keep the interior of the vehicle clean and sanitized after each route / trip

Communicate discipline procedures and/or problems either by verbal interaction or by written communication to riders, parents and principals.

Report work related injuries and student injuries immediately to the Driver Manager.

Attend all required in-service trainings and safety meetings.

Attend all route practices and rehearsals.

Attend Special Needs trainings, as required.

Establish and maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Read and follow established procedures and guidelines.

Adhere to route assignment changes.

Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:

School buses, emergency equipment (triangle reflectors, fire extinguisher, bodily fluids kit, etc.), two-way radio, wheel chair lift, securements, fuel pump, cleaning equipment (sanitizer, rag, towel, broom, mop, etc.).

Working Conditions:

Maintain emotional and physical control under stress. Prolonged driving and sitting. Frequent walking, standing, twisting, climbing stairs, stooping, bending, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension. Moderate lifting and carrying. Work outside and inside; Work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold), vehicle fumes, noise and dust. Working around moving vehicles and vehicles/machinery with moving parts. Irregular hours and occasional prolonged hours.
