Job Title: Med/Surg RN Profession: GGH Level 1 RN Med/Surg Specialty: ACUTE : LVL1RN : Med/Surg Duration: Contract must have an end date in February/March, no exceptions Shift: 3x12s, day/night shift variable, including weekends and holidays Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 years of Med/Surg experience required License: NYS RN Licensure Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS (AHA or RQI only), NIHSS Must-Have: 2 years of Med/Surg experience Description: The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients and families. The Registered Professional Nurse assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates the care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The RN develops specialized skills in the area of patients admitted for medical conditions. He/She provides care to adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations with medical conditions. The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing. The Registered Nurse is expected to promote comfort and provide emotional support in a healing environment. The RN applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care. The RN assesses patient and family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness, and analyzing data obtained through direct observation, technology, or healthcare team communication. An individualized plan of care is created to address the nature and scope of the identified health problems. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members, goals are set and the patient’s progress is monitored. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response, change in condition, or reprioritization of needs. The RN promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. Mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members are encouraged to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. The RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with the individual’s education, training, and scope of practice. Understanding personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies is crucial. Motivation of the patient and family is emphasized by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home. Patient and family learning styles are assessed and sessions are structured to maximize understanding. Teachable moments during the care delivery process are sought to emphasize pertinent information. The RN asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process. Tools and information are provided to assist the patient’s family after discharge. Education provided and the patient/family response to the education are documented. Quality and effectiveness of nursing practice are systematically evaluated, and results of quality improvement activities are used to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and care delivery. Self-evaluation of practice is engaged, identifying strengths and areas for professional development. Accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skills is taken seriously. Logic and reasoning are used to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Nursing practice reflects the importance of making meaningful connections with patients and families. A helping, trusting, and caring relationship is developed by being present in the moment of interaction, listening, communicating, engaging, and anticipating patient and family needs. The patient and family are acknowledged as the central focus of all care and services. Creating a healing environment is emphasized as a key element of professional nursing practice. Skill in the application of interventions, including medication administration, is demonstrated. Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated. Required tasks involve potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues.
