Critical Requirements

• Current Alaska Pharmacist License required.
• Flu vaccination required.
• Start date will be no less than 6 weeks after SEARHC receives the traveler's fingerprint cards for processing.
• Traveler should schedule fingerprinting immediately after acceptance and mail the cards within 2 3 days to help avoid start-date delays.
• Agency is responsible for assisting with housing and transportation.
• BLS for Healthcare Providers required.

Position Summary

The Pharmacist works within the pharmacy department to ensure safe, effective, and cost-effective medication therapy and appropriate patient outcomes. Responsibilities include preparing and dispensing medications in compliance with federal and state law, counseling patients, providing drug information to healthcare providers and staff, maintaining drug inventory, and participating in quality improvement activities.

The role requires substantial independent professional judgment , particularly when evaluating prescriptions, identifying potential medication-related problems, counseling patients, and making recommendations to prescribers.

Key Responsibilities

Medication Review & Dispensing

• Review prescriptions for:
  • Appropriate therapy
  • Legality and completeness
  • Contraindications
  • Drug interactions
  • Allergies
  • Adverse drug reactions
  • Abnormal laboratory values
• Review patient charts and consult prescribers when clarification or alternate therapy is needed.
• Enter prescriptions into pharmacy software.
• Verify completed prescriptions accurately and promptly.
• Maintain required pharmacy records and documentation.

Clinical Pharmacy

• Perform medication therapy management and prescription refill chart reviews.
• Provide clinical recommendations to providers.
• Request prescription refills on behalf of patients.
• Participate in Drug Utilization Evaluation activities.
• Provide drug information and medication therapy consultation.
• Support pharmacy-run clinics.
• Participate in health promotion and disease prevention activities related to medications.

Patient Counseling

• Educate patients regarding:
  • Medication indication
  • Drug name and strength
  • Proper use
  • Expected therapeutic changes
• Verify patient understanding.
• Communicate with patients and healthcare providers to resolve medication-related problems and optimize care.

Department Operations

• Maintain appropriate medication inventory.
• Select appropriate formulary medications.
• Ensure medication availability, preparation, and control.
• Direct and verify the daily activities of pharmacy technicians.
• Serve as a role model and educator for pharmacy students and technicians.
• Participate in quality control, quality improvement, meetings, and committees.
• Assist with policy and procedure development.
• Perform additional departmental responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Pharm.D. degree required.

Alternative specified by the facility: Candidates licensed before 2003 with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree may be considered with 3 years of hospital and/or ambulatory clinic pharmacy experience .

The description states there is no equivalent substitution for the degree outside of this specified pathway.

Licensure

• Unrestricted Alaska Registered Pharmacist license required.

Certification

• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

Preferred

• Completion of a nationally recognized ASHP pharmacy residency program .

Knowledge & Skills

The pharmacist must demonstrate:

• Strong pharmaceutical science knowledge.
• Ability to review medical histories, laboratory results, and medication orders.
• Knowledge of state and federal pharmacy regulations.
• Ability to provide care across all age groups .
• Strong oral and written communication.
• Computer application proficiency.
• Strong mathematical skills for oral and IV medication dosage calculations and compounding.
• Sound professional judgment.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to prioritize and adapt to interruptions and changing workloads.
• Ability to respond quickly to emergency requests.
