The New Jersey Judiciary, Appellate Division Clerk's Office, is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented professional with strong leadership skills to provide direct supervision to the Paralegal Unit.
Under the direction of the Court Executive 2b (Chief Counsel), the selected candidate will effectively supervise, train and assign work to five members of the Paralegal Unit team, conduct their performance evaluations and provide guidance, assistance and back-up to them. The candidate will participate in setting policies and procedures to ensure the timely review and processing of all appeal-initiating documents. A working knowledge of appellate court rules and procedures is important.
The Unit's work is critical; it is responsible for reviewing all case-initiating jurisdictional documents submitted to the Appellate Division, which include notices of appeal, case information statements, transcript request forms, filing fees or motions for leave to proceed as an indigent, certificates of service, and motions for leave to appeal. Deficiencies must be communicated in a comprehensible and timely manner.
The Unit receives a plethora of submissions; setting priorities and working efficiently are essential. The candidate will also possess excellent customer service skills to ensure proper responses to correspondence, questions and telephone calls from various customers, i.e. judges, attorneys, self-represented litigants and other Judiciary staff members.
REMOTE WORK: The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, in addition to installing a multifactor authentication app on your phone or tablet, you will be required to have high speed home internet access.
Example of Duties
- Directing staff in the completion of their assigned duties
- Conducting performance evaluations
- Reviewing, analyzing and processing all appeal-initiating documents and other correspondence in a timely manner
- Ensuring compliance with appellate court rules and procedures
- Additional related duties as assigned by the Clerk, Deputy Clerks, and Chief Counsel
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and three years of professional experience, one year of which shall have included experience in development, coordination, analysis, implementation, administration or research.
Substitution: Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute additional paraprofessional and/or professional experience on a year-for-year basis with one year of such experience being equal to 30 semester hour credits. An associate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of additional paraprofessional and/or professional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree. A master's degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of general experience as indicated above OR a law degree from an approved American Bar Association law school may be substituted for two years of general experience as indicated above.
Education Note: Degrees conferred outside of the United States must be evaluated by a recognized evaluation service.
