Description

The Senior Analytical Chemist will be a key member of BioMADE's Hayward pilot plant operations team. This facility supports clients developing emerging fermentation technologies by enabling demonstration of upstream and downstream processes at a scale that informs future commercial design. The Senior Analytical Chemist is responsible for developing and transferring analytical methods, establishing sample handling and data practices, and providing highquality analytical support throughout each client campaign.


This role works closely with the Projects Lead, Operations Manager, Shift Supervisors, and Technical Laboratory Manager to ensure seamless analytical integration within pilot plant operations. The Senior Analytical Chemist will oversee the performance and reliability of analytical instrumentation, drive fitforpurpose data and documentation practices, and communicate analytical progress and risks to internal teams and clients.


Success in this role requires strong expertise in analytical chemistry, handson experience with a range of analytical platforms (HPLC, GCMS, UPLC, LCMS, etc.), and the ability to translate client needs into actionable analytical strategies. As part of a lean and highly cross-functional site team, the role will also be expected to proactively cross-train in adjacent laboratory functions and provide hands-on support, as needed, in areas such as microbiology and lab-scale fermentation operations. The Senior Analytical Chemist will exemplify BioMADE's "zero harm" safety culture, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and help build a robust analytical capability as the Hayward site grows.


Key Responsibilities

Analytical Method Development and Technical Leadership

• Support the launch and operational readiness of the new analytical laboratory, including analytical capability and method portfolio assessment, client technology transfer planning, SOP development, procurement of consumables and standards, establishment of vendor networks, and analytical capacity planning.
• Lead the development, qualification, optimization, and transfer of analytical methods to support diverse client technologies and campaign needs.
• Provide technical oversight for analytical methods covering reference materials, starting materials, intermediates, stability studies, and product characterization.
• Develop fitforpurpose analytical strategies tailored to each client's process, expected outputs, and QC expectations.
• Oversee investigations of atypical or outofspecification results through scientific analysis, structured troubleshooting, and root cause identification.
• Develop the analytical chemistry capability at the site, including onboarding, training, work prioritization, and performance oversight.

Sample Management, Instrumentation, and Data Practices

• Establish efficient processes for sample handling, labeling, storage, processing, and tracking throughout pilot plant campaigns, including resource planning to support potential multiple concurrent runs.
• Oversee calibration, maintenance, and performance reliability of analytical instrumentation to ensure consistent and high quality data generation.
• Implement practical data management practices that ensure traceability, clear reporting, and well organized analytical results suitable for client review and internal use.
• Lead the selection, procurement, contracting, and coordination of external analytical testing and CRO services when required capabilities are not available onsite.

CrossFunctional Collaboration and Operational Support

• Partner closely with Operations, Project Leads, and client representatives to ensure analytical plans are aligned with campaign timelines and deliverables.
• Communicate analytical progress, risks, and turnaround expectations to maintain smooth pilot plant operations and customer satisfaction.
• Serve as a key member of the Hayward Operations team, contributing to continuous improvement, operational readiness, and a strong culture of quality and scientific rigor.
• As part of a lean and cross-functional site team,demonstrate flexibility and a strong willingness to develop proficiency and provide support to adjacent laboratory functions

Safety Leadership

• Exemplify and promote BioMADE's "zero harm" safety culture.
• Ensure analytical procedures incorporate appropriate safety considerations.
• Work with laboratory and pilot plant personnel to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
• Engage teams in proactive safety discussions and model safe work practices.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• BS/MS in analytical chemistry or related field with 10+ years of industry experience or PhD in analytical chemistry or related field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
• Demonstrated experience in analytical development, method validation, and method transfer in an industrial biotechnology, biopharma or pilot scale environment.
• Understanding of chemical hygiene, analytical waste streams handling, and use of hazardous standards/reagents, compressed gases, solvents, etc.
• Handson expertise with major analytical platforms including HPLC, UHPLC, LCMS, and GCMS (including SEC, RP, and IEX chromatography).
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively across internal teams and external partners, including experience managing consultants or technical vendors.

Hybrid Work Statement


BioMADE offers flexible (hybrid) work options based on business roles and needs. Employees are expected to work 3 days in the office environment and 2 days remotely. However, as the Hayward facility approaches the "staff up" date for operators, lab staff, and maintenance staff expected in early 2027, the position will transition from hybrid to full time at Hayward facility.
