Job Description

The School Social Worker supports students in overcoming social, emotional, behavioral, and attendance-related barriers to ensure they can fully engage in learning and succeed in school. Reporting to the principal or campus administrator, the School Social Worker plays a critical role in improving student attendance, promoting well-being, and connecting students and families to essential resources.

This role requires a highly organized, data-driven, and student-centered professional who can analyze attendance and behavioral data, provide counseling and intervention, and collaborate with staff and families to ensure all students are positioned for success. The School Social Worker works directly with students throughout the school day, providing individualized and group support, monitoring attendance and engagement, facilitating intervention plans, and offering real-time guidance to address social-emotional and environmental needs. The School Social Worker also contributes to schoolwide systems that promote student accountability, safety, and overall well-being.

Key Activities

Attendance Intervention & Truancy Prevention

  • Monitor and analyze student attendance data to identify at-risk and truant students
  • Develop and implement attendance intervention and truancy prevention plans
  • Conduct home visits, parent meetings, and attend truancy hearings as required
  • Collaborate with school staff and external agencies to improve student attendance
Student Support & Counseling
  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions to address social-emotional, behavioral, and environmental needs
  • Conduct assessments including behavioral evaluations and bio-psychosocial histories
  • Develop and implement individualized student support and intervention plans
  • Support students experiencing challenges such as mental health concerns, family instability, or crisis situations
  • Participate in crisis response efforts and provide post-crisis support services
Data Analysis & Student Monitoring
  • Track, document, and report student attendance, behavior, and intervention outcomes
  • Analyze trends to identify systemic needs and recommend strategies for improvement
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant case documentation
Student-Centered Responsibilities
  • Actively participate in Student-Based Team (SBT) and MTSS processes
  • Collaborate with teachers and administrators to support at-risk students
  • Facilitate prevention and education sessions on topics such as mental health, substance abuse, bullying, and character development
  • Support student success planning by involving families, teachers, and other stakeholders
Student & Family Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with students and families to support attendance and well-being
  • Conduct regular parent conferences & provide education on attendance policies & student needs
  • Communicate clearly and consistently regarding interventions and available resources
  • Advocate for students and families to ensure access to appropriate services
Community Partnerships & Resources
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community agencies and service providers
  • Connect students and families to external resources for academic, social, and emotional support
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, social services, and other agencies when necessary

Success in Year 1:
  • Reduction in chronic absenteeism and improved attendance rates among targeted students
  • 90%+ of identified at-risk students have documented intervention plans implemented with fidelity
  • Timely and accurate documentation of all student cases, interventions, and outcomes
  • Positive feedback from staff and families regarding responsiveness, support, and communication
  • Meets highly effective on professionalism (timeliness, compliance, communication, and follow-through)

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Master's degree in Social work or related field preferred Bilingual is a plus
  • One (1) year of experience in social work or one (1) year of experience working in a school for a community agency or graduate internship

  • Bilingual perferred
  • Valid or eligible Florida school counselor certification preferred
