Treatment Plant Operator I

SUMMARY Under indirect supervision on an assigned shift, participates in the operation and quality control of a Wastewater Treatment Plant. Responsible for the quality of effluent as set by Federal, State, and City regulations. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime as needed by the department, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES - Makes periodic rounds of the plant to assure that the plant process is operating properly. - Monitors and records the flow through the plant. - Collects samples for laboratory analysis. - Performs standard tests for operations control. - Maintains records for operations control of the plant (every 2 hours). - Checks all pumps, motors, engines, and blowers and associated equipment. - Fills out maintenance request forms on equipment not operating properly. - Reports the status of the plant to the supervisor. - Maintains flow distribution to; industrial, equalization, digestion, sludge, etc. - Removes debris from clarifier as needed. - Communicates to the oncoming operator the plant status and any hazards. - Performs other job-related duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent (GED). Must be able to obtain aTCEQClass D Wastewater Treatment Certification within one (1) year of employment. A valid Texas Class C Drivers License is required. A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant is preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems. - Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing. - Ability to operate and make minor repairs to small hand tools, small pieces of equipment, PH meters, analytical balances and CL2 safety equipment. - Ability to safely drive a pick-up truck.
