Openings as of 5/23/2026 Head Mechanic JobID: 2005 Position Type: Custodial/Maintenance/ Maintenance Date Posted: 5/20/2026 Location: School City of Hobart Date Available: Immediately Head Mechanic Service Center Position Summary To perform skilled maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and related work on school buses, passenger vehicles, trucks, snow removal equipment, and other district gasoline and diesel-powered motorized equipment in support of safe and efficient district operations. Key Responsibilities Perform mechanical, electrical, diagnostic, preventive maintenance, and repair work on buses, trucks, passenger vehicles, and other district vehicles and equipment. Inspect pupil transportation vehicles for compliance with Indiana state requirements and district safety expectations. Maintain, repair, and check vehicle safety systems, including related bus safety equipment. Use diagnostic tools, software, manuals, and equipment to identify and resolve vehicle and equipment issues. Maintain accurate repair, inspection, maintenance, parts, service, inventory, and compliance records. Assist with organizing shop workflow, prioritizing repairs and inspections, and supporting other mechanics or assigned support employees, as applicable. Operate district vehicles, including buses, as needed and as properly licensed and assigned. Assist with snow removal, plowing, salting, and related weather response duties as assigned. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe shop areas, vehicles, tools, equipment, and workspaces. Qualifications The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the essential functions of the position. High School Diploma or GED. Three to five years of successful experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Valid Indiana driver's license. Must hold or be willing and able to obtain a valid Indiana Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with required endorsements, including air brake, school bus, and passenger endorsements. Ability to maintain CDL, endorsement, physical examination, drug testing, and related requirements necessary to operate district vehicles, including school buses, as applicable. Preferred Two-year vocational training in automotive mechanics or a related field. Prior experience maintaining and repairing school buses, commercial vehicles, trucks, or similar fleet vehicles. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. Experience with air brake systems, air conditioning systems, electrical systems, vehicle electronics, GPS systems, camera systems, and related vehicle technology. Terms of Employment Full-time position. Salary and benefits as defined in the School City of Hobart's applicable handbook and/or approved compensation schedule. FLSA Status Non-Exempt Pay Rate $29.21/hour District-provided tools and service truck for assigned work responsibilities. The employee must be able to move throughout the garage, shop areas, parking areas, district grounds, and around vehicles and equipment. The employee may be required to work in, under, around, and on buses, trucks, passenger vehicles, and other district vehicles or equipment. The employee may be required to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move tools, tires, parts, batteries, equipment, supplies, and vehicle components. Typical lifting and carrying requirements may exceed 50 pounds, and the employee may be required to exert up to 100 pounds of force as needed, with heavier items moved with assistance or appropriate equipment. Work is performed primarily in a garage, shop, vehicle storage areas, parking areas, and on district grounds. Work involves regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, vehicles, tools, shop equipment, lifts, diagnostic equipment, welding equipment, chemicals, fuels, oils, grease, fumes, dust, noise, vibration, electrical hazards, and varying indoor and outdoor temperatures and weather conditions. The position may involve urgent repairs, inspection deadlines, snow and ice response, and other operational needs requiring attention to safety, vehicle readiness, and district schedules.
