SUMMARY:   The Industrial Designer I role is an entry level role, responsible for assisting in product design, product improvement, development, and support. This position requires a solid understanding of mechanics, ergonomics, knowledge in a variety of manufacturing processes, analyze, develop, and correct product issues with the support of engineering staff. This position will also be a key contributor in new product development, refinement, and successful product launches.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software (e.g., Solidworks, Fusion, AutoCad, Rhino)
  • Collaborate with engineers and production teams to ensure designs meet manufacturing requirements.
  • Support prototyping, testing, and design validation processes.
  • Problem Resolution - Troubleshoot, analyze and determine root cause and successful corrective action to issues that arrive related to product design.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards and industrial regulations.
  • Assist with troubleshooting design or fitment issues on the production floor
  • Interact with vendors concerning parts they supply or propose to supply to company.
  • Present design status and concepts to members of Engineering and upper management.

COMPETENCIES/ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Understanding of plastics manufacturing processes (injection molding, vacuum forming, roto molding, extrusion, etc.)
  • Understanding of metal manufacturing processes (welding, machining, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret and create technical drawings and GD&T.
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Solid understanding of mechanics, strength of materials, knowledge in a variety of manufacturing processes and the ability to design and prototype product.
  • Basic experience required to facilitate the most effective and cost effective designs, as well as develop and analyze test metrics and validation.
  • Ability to manage workload within several projects, including prioritization, time management and coordination with various departments in order to meet project goals and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely in written and verbal formats.
  • Demonstrated capability to develop strong interpersonal working relationships and work in a team environment.

EDUCATION (OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE):

Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering degree (with design experience) or equivalent; 1-4 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates in a professional office environment, plant floor, and shop locations. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers. This job will also entail the use of hand and power tools as well as test and measuring equipment.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use of hands and arms; lift, bend, squat, and kneel. Routine lifting of up to 40lbs may be required.

 

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK: This is a full-time salary position.
