What you'll do:The CNC Operator – Door Shop is responsible for setting up, programming, operating, monitoring, and maintaining CNC machinery used to prepare commercial architectural wood doors and related millwork products. This role reviews work orders, shop drawings, door schedules, hardware templates, and approved submittals to ensure products are machined accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with customer specifications and company quality standards.
In addition to CNC operation, this position performs detailed woodworking, hand fitting, custom modifications, and finish carpentry when preparations cannot be completed entirely by the machine. The ideal candidate combines CNC experience, mechanical aptitude, woodworking skills, careful craftsmanship, and strong attention to detail in a fast-paced production environment.
CNC Setup & Machine Operation
- Set up, program, and safely operate CNC machinery and related production equipment
- Review work orders, shop drawings, door schedules, hardware templates, technical specifications, and approved submittals before beginning production
- Verify product dimensions, thickness, handing, swing, material, finish, fire rating, opening number, and hardware requirements
- Select, enter, or adjust the correct machine programs and preparation specifications
- Confirm measurements, tooling, reference points, machine settings, and product orientation before machining
- Monitor machine performance throughout operation and make authorized adjustments when necessary
- Maintain accurate production, operational, and machine records
- Work closely with supervisors and production team members to meet daily production goals and customer deadlines
Door & Hardware Preparation
- Perform accurate CNC preparations for commercial door hardware, including:
- Hinges and pivots
- Cylindrical, mortise, and electronic locks
- Exit devices
- Flush bolts and coordinators
- Door closers
- Automatic operators
- Specialty and access-control hardware
- Complete first-piece inspections before machining multiple doors with identical preparations
- Verify completed machining matches approved drawings, work orders, door schedules, and manufacturer templates
- Properly label completed products with project information, opening number, and handing
Woodworking, Hand Fitting & Custom Fabrication
- Complete preparations that cannot be performed entirely by the CNC machine or require additional hand fitting
- Safely operate routers, drills, saws, chisels, sanders, planers, jigs, templates, and other woodworking tools
- Hand-mortise, drill, route, trim, fit, and modify doors for specialty hardware
- Perform lite and louver cutouts according to approved dimensions and manufacturer requirements
- Install or prepare blocking, reinforcements, fillers, raceways, and related components when permitted
- Perform minor repairs to door edges, faces, cutouts, and machining areas
- Fit, trim, square, sand, and finish preparations to professional commercial standards
- Build or modify jigs and templates to improve accuracy and repeatability
- Assist with custom fabrication and other wood-shop projects as assigned
- Protect prefinished door surfaces from scratches, dents, chips, and other damage
Quality Control
- Measure and verify hardware locations before machining or performing handwork
- Use tape measures, squares, levels, calipers, gauges, and templates to confirm accuracy
- Maintain required tolerances and a high standard of workmanship
- Confirm fire-rated doors are modified only within manufacturer and listing-agency limitations
- Stop production and report conflicts between the product, work order, shop drawings, hardware schedule, or templates
- Identify, document, and separate damaged or nonconforming materials
- Minimize material damage, rework, scrap, and field corrections through careful inspection
- Complete a final quality inspection before releasing products for staging or shipment
Machine Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Inspect, clean, and replace router bits, drill bits, and other tooling as required
- Perform routine machine cleaning and operator-level preventive maintenance
- Troubleshoot minor machine, programming, tooling, and alignment issues
- Recognize and report equipment malfunctions, programming errors, unusual operation, or repair needs promptly
- Maintain machinery, tooling, and work areas in clean, organized, and safe condition
- Support workflow efficiency and continuous-improvement initiatives
Safety & Operational Excellence
- Follow all company, OSHA, machine-specific, and wood-shop safety requirements
- Wear required PPE, including eye protection, hearing protection, and safety footwear
- Properly use machine guards, dust-collection systems, push tools, clamps, carts, lifts, and other safety devices
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures before maintenance or clearing hazardous jams
- Never bypass guards, interlocks, or safety controls
- Maintain safe lifting and product-handling practices
- Report injuries, near misses, unsafe conditions, damaged tooling, and equipment concerns immediately
- Participate in required safety meetings, equipment training, and production initiatives
- Perform additional duties as assigned
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
- Experience operating CNC woodworking, door-machining, millwork, or similar production equipment
- Strong woodworking, carpentry, and hand-tool skills
- Ability to safely operate routers, drills, saws, sanders, chisels, and related shop equipment
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, shop drawings, door schedules, hardware templates, and technical specifications
- Working knowledge of fractions, decimals, tolerances, and basic shop mathematics
- Basic computer and machine-interface skills with the ability to learn CNC software and controls
- Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship
- Ability to work independently, manage production priorities, and meet deadlines
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
- Dependable attendance and commitment to safety, quality, and productivity
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Direct experience operating a KVAL EFX or other KVAL door-machining system
- Experience programming or setting up CNC machinery
- Experience preparing commercial architectural wood doors
- Knowledge of commercial door handing, hardware locations, and preparation requirements
- Familiarity with hinges, locks, exit devices, closers, pivots, flush bolts, automatic operators, and access-control hardware
- Experience working with prefinished, specialty, and fire-rated wood doors
- Experience building and using woodworking jigs and templates
- Experience with forklift, vacuum-lift, or other material-handling equipment
- Mechanical repair or maintenance experience is a plus
- Work is performed primarily in a wood-door shop, manufacturing, warehouse, or production environment
- Frequent exposure to machinery, woodworking dust, noise, production equipment, and changing warehouse temperatures
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday
- Ability to frequently bend, reach, kneel, push, pull, grasp, and perform repetitive movements
- Ability to independently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to safely handle large, heavy, and awkward commercial doors using approved mechanical equipment or team-lifting procedures
- Frequent use of CNC machinery, hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, carts, and material-handling equipment
- Overtime or extended hours may be required based on production schedules and business needs
