POSITION SUMMARY

PRN Paramedic delivers high-quality emergency medical care in pre-hospital settings as part of a public emergency response team. This role involves responding to 911 calls, providing advanced life support (ALS), and ensuring safe and efficient patient transport. Paramedics work under medical direction and in coordination with fire, law enforcement, and hospital personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required)

1. Identifies, intervenes, and stabilizes the ill or injured patient during interfaculty and intrafacility transport under the direction and in collaboration with the transporting physician.

2. Initiates and implements interventions for the ill or injured patient in emergent situations and provides patient care based protocols and within the scope of Kansas Board of EMS. Monitors, records and communicates patient condition and treatment, as appropriate.

3. Provides population specific education to the patient and family about the patient's illness and therapeutic interventions.

4. Inspects, maintains and cares for equipment to ensure safety of the transport team, patients and public.

5. Ensures patient and employee safety in all areas of operations;

6. Cooperates with Federal, State, and other local departments/agencies in search, rescue, and medical emergency situations;

7. Respond to emergency and non-emergent calls operates at his/her certification adhering to medical protocols, policies and under the direction of the medical director.

8. Respond to non-emergency calls to assist the public and other response agencies, taking appropriate action to minimize the loss of life and/or property;

9. Follows departmental mission statement; core values and applicable departmental polices, rules and regulations.

10. Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure compliance with HIPAA laws and regulations;

11. Maintain current knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, and regulations related to aspects of EMS;

12. Maintain positive working relationship with hospitals, medical professionals and staff, law enforcement, public works, fire, and other agencies in Pottawatomie County and surrounding areas;

13. Must have and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

1. Attends seminars and training sessions;

2. Performs departmental inventory control;

3. Educate self and staff on county geography, streets, roads and buildings.

4. Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

The work is often performed while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and could be performed while carrying additional equipment. The work is typically performed in an office, outdoors, and at the scenes of emergency events. Employee may be exposed to fire, smoke, noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases or pathogens, irritating chemicals and weather extremes. PPE items include goggles, masks, gloves, and all other protective clothing required for EMS operations.

Environment: Paramedics work in a variety of settings including ambulances, accident scenes, homes, streets, and healthcare facilities. Conditions can range from clean and climate-controlled to hazardous and unpredictable (e.g., outdoor accidents, crime scenes, industrial sites).

Schedule: Frequently includes long shifts (12, 24, or 48 hours), irregular hours, overnights, weekends, and holidays. Paramedics must be on-call and ready to respond at all times during their shift.

Pace: Fast-paced, high-stress work with frequent exposure to life-and-death situations.

Exposure Risks: Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, bodily fluids, chemicals, and physically dangerous situations such as fires or violent incidents.

Emotional Stress: High emotional demands due to patient trauma, death, and interactions with distressed family members or the public.

Strength & Endurance: Must be able to lift and carry patients and heavy equipment (often 100+ lbs) under challenging conditions.

Mobility: Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and standing for long periods. Must be able to move quickly and efficiently in confined or awkward spaces.

Stamina: Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks for extended periods without fatigue.

Manual Dexterity: Fine motor skills for tasks like IV insertion, airway management, and operating medical devices.

Vision & Hearing: Good visual and auditory acuity, including color vision and the ability to hear alarms, radio communications, and patient cues.

Mental Focus: Ability to stay focused and make quick, accurate decisions under pressure.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

• Thorough knowledge of emergency medical techniques, anatomy, pharmacology, and pre-hospital procedures.

• Strong decision-making skills in high-pressure environments.

• Effective written and verbal communication.

• Ability to work 12-hour, 24-hour, and 48-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Commitment to public service and patient-centered care.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

• HS or Equivalent/Diploma/GED (required)

• Associate Degree (preferred)

• National Registry (preferred)

• BLS and ACLS Healthcare Provider course completion card from the American Heart Association is required within 45 days of hire or job transfer date

• Driver License from the state of Kansas or Valid Driver's License (required)

• Licensed as a Paramedic by the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services (KSBEMS) required

• Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) certification, or equivalent required within 12 months of hire

SUPERVISION/ACCOUNTABILITY

Responsible for patient care as a Paramedic on a scene and in transport. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

This position is PRN/As-needed and does not guarantee a set number of hours per pay cycle or per year.


PRN employees with Pottawatomie County are not eligible for benefits.


$17.18-$24.72 plus 10% PRN premium

An offer for employment for this position is contingent upon the applicant passing pre-employment background checks which may include, but are not necessarily limited to: Drug Screening, Driving Record, Criminal History, Physical Capacity, and/or Skills Testing.
