Examples of Work Fires stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to heating plants, turbines, and other steam powered equipment. Fuels boilers by regulating automatic stokers, hand firing, and regulating the flow of oil in oil burners. Manipulates valves to control the operation of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges. Sees that water is maintained in the boiler at the required level. Maintains the fires in the boilers at the proper thickness and regulates the draft to obtain the most efficient results. Does the work involved in the repair, maintenance, and installation of grate units, tubes, and caps, and in turbining boilers. Measures and records amount of fuel used. Washes boiler and pump rooms and does other work to maintain the areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition. Makes emergency repairs and does the work required to keep the machines and equipment in good operating condition. Makes simple tests of boiler water to determine the amount of hardness, acidity, and alkalinity and may operate boiler water conditioning apparatus and equipment. Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, and supplies. Keeps essential records and files of the results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow. May operate and maintain air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Sweeps and cleans furnace rooms, keeps flues clean, picks up trash adjacent to furnace rooms and places in containers, and keeps trash compounds clean at all times. Becomes familiar with the normal operations of blowers motors and regulators and reports promptly any that are not operating normally. Reports breakage of or damage to furnaces or heaters promptly. Notifies proper individuals if anyone in anyway interferes with the operation of the furnaces or heaters. Reports to the proper individual whenever the fuel supply is running low. Adjusts drafts, oils pumps, electric motors, and other boiler room equipment. When firing season terminates, sweeps, mops, and scrubs floors. Cleans walls and ceilings, dusts and polishes furniture, polishes metal work, and cleans woodwork, windows, and lavatories. Makes minor repairs, cuts and trims grass and shrubbery, and acts as watchman. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Requirements License Applicants must possess a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of the appropriate type (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of the varied types of machines and equipment used in a power plant and in a high-pressure heating plant, including the supplies, materials, and tools used in lubricating and cleaning machinery and equipment. Knowledge of the problems, methods, and techniques used in repairing, maintaining, and installing grate units, tubes, and caps and in turbining boilers. Knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of firing stationary boilers and the varied types of stokers and their operation, including the several types of safety devices and measures. Knowledge of the proper levels for water in boilers to secure the maximum in safety and efficient operation. Knowledge of the problems, procedures, and methods used in maintaining the fires at the proper thickness and the regulation of the drafts so as to obtain the most efficient results. Knowledge of the methods, supplies, and materials used in washing and cleaning the boiler and pump rooms. Knowledge of the methods used in obtaining, storing, safeguarding, and properly using equipment, materials, and supplies. Knowledge of the maintenance of records and files showing the results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow. Ability to analyze steam boiler equipment operation and maintenance problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods. Ability to fire stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to turbines and other equipment powered by steam. Ability to fuel boilers by the regulation of automatic stokers, by hand firing, and by regulating the flow of oil in oil burners. Ability to control the operations of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges. Ability to maintain the water in the boilers at the needed levels and to regulate the draft to obtain the required results. Ability to inspect and check safety devices and units and to keep the machinery and equipment properly cleaned and lubricated. Ability to repair, maintain, and install tubes, caps, and grate units and in turbining boilers. Ability to take and record on log sheets readings from instruments. Ability to maintain the boiler and pump areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition. Ability to prepare and maintain records and files showing the results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
