CC Public Works 31325 Oasis Rd Center City, MN 55012, USA CC Public Works 31325 Oasis Rd Center City, MN 55012, USA Closing Date: 08/26/2026 $32.92 to $43.35 DOQ Title: Fleet Maintenance Technician Department: Public Works Reports to: Fleet Maintenance Supervisor Position Status: Full-time; Appointed; Union Job Location: Center City MN Public Works facility Position Objective Performs intermediate work diagnosing, repairing and servicing complex mechanical, electronic, air, hydraulic, and computer systems in county vehicles and equipment to ensure their safe and proper operation. Work is directed by the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor or their duly appointed representative and is reviewed primarily in terms of results obtained. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor. Essential Functions Inspects and repairs vehicles and equipment, performs necessary tests to correctly diagnose cause of failure, determines the most logical and effective method of repair, efficiently removes defective parts, and installs correct replacement parts, or modifies part to correct failure. Performs emergency field repairs to quickly get equipment back in operation or back to the repair facility for a more permanent problem resolution. Troubleshoot vehicles and equipment to determine the necessary repairs. Independently monitors work projects and plans for maximum work accomplishment. Checks vehicle and equipment systems function to seek out potential problems as provided by the preventive maintenance schedules. Conducts vehicle and equipment repairs to include engines, transmissions, rear axles, suspensions, and hydraulics, cooling systems, brake systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, computer systems, air systems and controls. Performs minor body work and painting. Uses fleet management software to make work orders, find parts, view vehicle history, and record repairs performed. Reports the status of equipment repair and/or maintenance to Fleet Maintenance Supervisor. Maintains the garage area; keeps it clean, safe, and orderly; ensures that all shop equipment is in safe operating condition and complies with OSHA, MPCA, or EPA when applicable. Recommends to Fleet Maintenance Supervisor or their duly appointed representative equipment to repair. Orders parts for repairs as needed, travels to parts dealerships when necessary to purchase and/or pickup parts. Welds, designs, cuts, repairs, layout and fabricate specialized equipment from both formal and informal plans and verbal instructions. Perform pre-delivery and set-up of new vehicles and equipment and any other modifications needed to improve safety, efficiency, and productivity of the purchased units. This includes squad cars, plow trucks, and other equipment. Ability to use and maintain proficiency in AllData computer data programs and associated computer and diagnostic equipment. Ability to use RTA Fleet Management Program to track vehicles, repairs, parts, and inventory. Operate and maintain overhead crane system, forklift, truck hoist and scissor lift. Perform DOT Commercial Vehicle Inspections on County vehicles and certify their conditions for operation on public roadways. Ability to perform assigned tasks at second location with little or no notice. Ability to perform assigned duties off location under hazardous conditions with service truck. Ability to plow parking lot and shovel sidewalks to keep them free of snow and ice during winter months, especially during early callouts due to snowstorms. Ability to attend continuing education classes and training for the safe operation of all tools and equipment, including, but not limited to, chain saw, safety equipment, traffic control, vehicles, equipment, RTA software, and AllData. Confers daily with Fleet Maintenance Supervisor or their duly appointed representative to determine priorities and complete work accordingly. Consult with equipment dealership personnel on some repairs and maintenance procedures. Make arrangements for repairs performed by dealerships. Meet with product representatives as needed. Keeps up to date on current vehicle and equipment regulations and technologies. Supervises routine equipment and vehicle repair of other County employees. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of heavy truck and automotive mechanics Knowledge of hydraulics, diesel, air, and electrical systems Knowledge of welding and automotive body work methods and techniques Knowledge of safety equipment and procedures Skill in performing maintenance and repairs on various types of highway equipment Skill in the operation of various types of machines, equipment, and tools Ability to analyze the problems encountered with fleet and shop equipment and to make the necessary repairs. Ability to read and interpret shop manuals and parts books Ability to maintain routine records. Ability to perform physical labor over extended periods of time. Ability to operate diagnostic and testing equipment to determine the nature of equipment malfunction. Ability to operate all types of light and heavy equipment Ability to use computer and electronic diagnostic equipment and programs, i.e. AllData Ability to use computer programs, i.e. RTA, Word, Outlook, Excel, fax and two-way radio. Desired Minimum Qualifications Associate or Technical degree and considerable experience, or a combination of equivalent education and experience in automotive, heavy truck, construction equipment, or ag equipment repair and servicing. Special Qualifications Possession of or ability to obtain within 6 months a valid Minnesota Commercial Vehicle Driver’s License, Class A with air brake and tanker Endorsements. Possession of or ability to obtain within 6 months a Minnesota DOT Commercial Vehicle inspection certification number. Must be able to obtain a certificate for forklift operation. Must be able to obtain a certificate to operate a scissor lift. Must be able to obtain EPA 609 certification for automotive A/C. Must be able to obtain Whelen certification. Tools and Equipment Used Phone, computers, fax machines, copiers, heavy equipment, light equipment, automobile, power tools, air powered tools, hand tools, computerized diagnostic testing equipment, and shop equipment. Working Conditions This classification frequently involves physical agility requirements such as: climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, repetitive motions and manual dexterity. Sensory requirements include standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing ideas by means of the spoken word; and hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communication and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work mostly in garage setting. The employee is constantly exposed to fumes, noise, vibration, heat, humidity, cold, dust, odors, and dirty conditions. The employee is exposed to electrical shock, works in high precarious places, is required to use safety equipment, and is exposed to chemicals.
