Position Overview Deputy Sheriffs are state‑recognized law enforcement officers with statewide powers. Howard County Deputies perform a range of duties in support of county law enforcement operations, serving court orders and maintaining court security. Responsibilities Process and serve civil and criminal summons, in and out of state. Serve domestic‑violence related protective orders. Serve emergency petitions for mental‑health evaluations. Transport prisoners as per court orders. Preserve order during court sessions and maintain court security. Enforce all state and county laws. Levy and seize property on judgment, and collect money and fees. Make arrests on warrants and civil body attachments. Work with local, state, and federal officers in cooperative law‑enforcement efforts. Provide court‑ordered protection. Participate in extraditions out of state with respect to prisoner transportation. Maintain a valid driver’s license. Issue Maryland state citations as required. Issue Howard County parking citations. Perform other related duties as assigned; no supervisory responsibilities. Shift and Availability Requirements Shift work, including weekends and holidays, is required. Deputies may be required to remain in court for the duration of daily proceedings, resulting in irregular duty hours. Deputies may need to travel to other states and stay overnight on extradition assignments. Deputies are fully constituted peace officers and are responsible for taking law‑enforcement action. The position is subject to on‑call status and is an essential employee position, requiring work on weekends, evenings, nights, and holidays. Physical Demands and Work Environment Employees frequently stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Occasionally sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees are exposed to outside weather conditions and moderate noise levels. Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED. Previous successful completion of entry‑level training as per Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC). Required Skills and Abilities Knowledge of law‑enforcement practices, court procedures, and process‑serving regulations. Knowledge of civil process procedures. Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws. Ability to use issued/approved firearms. Ability to prepare records and reports. Ability to understand and carry out oral and/or written directions. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Mathematical ability: add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; compute rate, ratio, and percent; interpret bar graphs. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
