Location: Tampa, FL

Salary: $140,000–$165,000 annually + Performance-Based Bonus

Position Overview

A leading national engineering and building science consulting firm is seeking an experienced Director of Operations – Building Enclosure Consulting to lead and support its growing practice in Tampa, Florida. This position combines strategic operational leadership with hands-on technical consulting, making it an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering, architecture, or building science professional who enjoys developing teams, improving business performance, and remaining actively involved in client projects. The Director of Operations will oversee operational performance across multiple offices while maintaining an active role in technical consulting. Approximately 50% of the position will focus on billable consulting work, including building investigations, condition assessments, technical reviews, field observations, testing oversight, and client consulting. The remaining time will be dedicated to operational leadership, team development, strategic planning, and business growth. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise in building enclosure systems, restoration, rehabilitation, or forensic consulting with proven leadership capabilities, financial acumen, and the ability to develop high-performing teams.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Consulting & Project Delivery

• Perform building science and building enclosure consulting services, including investigations, condition assessments, field observations, testing oversight, and technical evaluations.
• Lead or support complex building enclosure, restoration, rehabilitation, forensic, and existing building consulting projects.
• Serve as a trusted technical advisor to building owners, architects, contractors, attorneys, property managers, and other project stakeholders.
• Review technical reports, engineering analyses, repair recommendations, construction documents, and project deliverables for quality and accuracy.
• Participate in site visits, client meetings, construction observations, and technical consulting activities.
• Maintain individual billable utilization goals while balancing operational leadership responsibilities.
• Provide technical guidance on challenging building performance issues, enclosure failures, and repair strategies.

Operational Leadership & Business Performance

• Oversee operational performance across multiple offices, including staffing, utilization, backlog, forecasting, invoicing, accounts receivable, profitability, and project execution.
• Manage resource planning and workload distribution across teams and geographic locations.
• Monitor key operational metrics and implement strategies to improve efficiency, consistency, and client satisfaction.
• Ensure projects are delivered safely, profitably, on schedule, and in accordance with established quality standards.
• Identify opportunities to improve project delivery processes, operational workflows, and financial performance.
• Support the implementation of standardized procedures, technology solutions, automation, and operational best practices.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to establish performance goals and operational priorities.

Team Leadership & Professional Development

• Lead, mentor, and develop consultants, project managers, and senior technical professionals.
• Foster a collaborative, accountable environment focused on technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Provide coaching on project management, client relationships, technical consulting, and professional development.
• Identify emerging leaders and support career development and succession planning initiatives.
• Encourage collaboration and resource sharing across offices and service lines.
• Support recruiting, onboarding, employee retention, and team development efforts.
• Help develop technical professionals into trusted advisors, project leaders, and future business leaders.

Technical Excellence & Quality Assurance

• Establish and maintain consistent technical standards across the consulting practice.
• Promote the use of standardized specifications, technical details, quality assurance procedures, and project delivery tools.
• Review technical deliverables to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with project requirements.
• Encourage knowledge sharing and technical collaboration across teams and offices.
• Support continued innovation in building science, building enclosure consulting, restoration, rehabilitation, and forensic investigations.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen technical capabilities and improve service delivery.

Business Development & Strategic Growth

• Partner with business development and market leadership teams to identify new opportunities and strengthen existing client relationships.
• Support technical professionals in expanding client accounts and introducing additional consulting services.
• Participate in annual business planning, including revenue objectives, profitability targets, utilization goals, backlog management, staffing, and growth initiatives.
• Analyze operational and financial performance to develop strategies that improve business results and client experience.
• Support proposal development, project pursuits, and strategic client engagement.
• Contribute to organizational growth initiatives, market expansion, and operational integration efforts.
• Represent the building enclosure consulting practice in cross-functional leadership and strategic planning activities.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
• 8+ years of professional experience in engineering, architecture, construction management, building science, restoration, rehabilitation, forensic consulting, or a related field.
• 2+ years of leadership experience involving staff management, business operations, financial performance, strategic planning, or business development.
• Strong understanding of building science principles, building enclosure systems, structural systems, and the design and construction process.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex consulting projects while maintaining strong client relationships.
• Proven ability to mentor technical professionals and develop high-performing teams.
• Strong financial and operational management skills, including experience with utilization, project budgets, forecasting, backlog, profitability, and business performance.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and coordinating resources across multiple projects or offices.
• Ability to review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, technical reports, and project documentation.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to balance strategic leadership responsibilities with hands-on technical consulting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) license.
• Experience leading a building enclosure, building science, restoration, rehabilitation, or forensic consulting practice.
• Background managing operations across multiple offices or geographic regions.
• Demonstrated success in business development, client relationship management, and practice growth.
• Experience with operational forecasting, financial reporting, and performance management.
• Familiarity with building enclosure investigations, repair design, construction administration, and quality assurance procedures.
