Florida State Director

Position Description America Votes is seeking a Florida State Director to work collaboratively with local, state, and national partner organizations in the development and execution of coordinated plans to advance progressive change in Florida. The State Director leads the planning and engagement process with partners to win elections year‑round and develop strategies for electoral and issue priorities. Responsibilities include leading the state table in Florida, developing, implementing, and analyzing state campaign plans for both advocacy and electoral objectives, with emphasis on direct voter contact and education. The State Director recognizes and capitalizes on immediate political opportunities while staying focused on long‑term strategic priorities. The ideal candidate has expertise in electoral field program management, superb interpersonal skills, a demonstrated commitment to racial equity, and the capacity to lead an inclusive, collaborative, and diverse coalition of partner organizations. Key Responsibilities Lead Campaign Strategy : Work with partner organizations and stakeholders to design efficient statewide and ballot‑level electoral and voter education plans; evaluate and report on stakeholder outcomes; ensure secure and effective use of the state coalition voter file; collaborate with the national development team to identify in‑state funding opportunities. Staff Management : Mentor, develop, and lead a talented Florida team; create work plans, provide professional development, and offer ongoing supervision and support; implement organizational goals and manage staff toward shared objectives. Coalition Leadership & Management : Convene individual partners and the collective table regularly; facilitate collaboration and decision making; assist local organizations with capacity building; implement systems for ongoing evaluation; coordinate with national staff; explore opportunities to expand membership and partnerships; foster a productive coalition environment that advances racial equity goals. Equity and Inclusion : Lead the coalition to approach campaign and coalition work through a lens of racial equity; model equity, diversity, and inclusion internally and externally; support work to build power with BIPOC‑led partners. Advance Election Modernization : Support programs and legislative advocacy related to election modernization in collaboration with voting rights organizations and advocates. Additional duties as assigned. Key Qualifications Required 7+ years of electoral and advocacy campaign experience, including two cycles of statewide leadership and management of senior‑level campaign staff. Expertise in electoral field program management with strong direct voter contact in racially diverse states. Track record of successfully managing a coalition with political judgment and discretion. Proven ability to advance racial equity through programmatic work, partner relationships, and organizational systems. Strong staff management skills, fostering a collaborative, supportive culture with mentoring and feedback. Superior interpersonal skills and a history of building positive relationships. Resilience and flexibility in planning and problem solving. Compelling communication skills, including writing and presentation. Negotiation, consensus building, conflict resolution, and strategic disagreement skills. Data literacy and synthesis to inform strategy. Willingness to work long hours, irregular schedules, and travel as needed. Collaborative leadership style, low ego, service spirit, sense of humor. Proficiency with Google Suite or MS Office. Knowledge of Florida politics, organizations, and legislature. Preferred Experience with funders, including report preparation and presentation. Experience with vote‑by‑mail, absentee programs, digital tools, new voter contact technologies, and program testing. Fluency in Spanish. Experience managing unionized staff. Location and Travel Based in Florida with a preference for Miami or Tampa. Frequent travel across the state and some in‑office time in Miami. Out‑of‑state travel may also be required. Compensation and Benefits Minimum starting salary $114,000; negotiable based on experience. Benefits include 100% coverage of medical, dental, and vision premiums; life and long‑term disability insurance; monthly cell‑phone stipend; professional development funds; parental leave; 401(k) after four months of service.
