Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer - Per Diem

Summary The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for evaluating the heart using ultrasound, requiring an understanding of cardiac pathology and proficiency with the sonography system to capture digital images. The sonographer must conduct thorough examinations and ensure accurate reporting for cardiologists. Daily responsibilities also include patient scheduling, equipment maintenance, equipment failure logging, and quality assessment within the Echocardiography Laboratory. Responsibilities Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic echocardiography exams – M-Mode, two-dimensional, Doppler, color Doppler, exercise stress, and dobutamine stress. Uses cognitive and technical skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures to anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic information. Positions patients correctly, adjusts machine settings, obtains accurate measurements, and records a full cardiac ultrasound exam. Provides patient education to reduce anxiety, handles special needs, and maintains a safe, comfortable environment. Coordinates schedules, logs daily patient activity, maintains equipment, and reports failures. Participates in laboratory accreditation, provides in-service training, and assists in research studies. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Associate degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent. Preferred graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Technology program. Registry certification by ARDMS in Adult Echocardiography and Physics expected within first two years. Must maintain active ARDMS status and comply with CME requirements (minimum 15 CME over three years for non‑registered). Sufficient cardiac ultrasound experience may satisfy educational requirements. Skills and Abilities Integrates diagnostic sonograms, lab results, patient history, and medical records; tailors the exam accordingly. Exercises independent judgment to acquire optimal diagnostic information. Communicates effectively with patients and the healthcare team. Builds effective working relationships, follows procedures, works efficiently, and manages emergency situations. Obtains optimal images on technically difficult patients and continues to progress skill levels. Physical Requirements Emotionally fit and physically capable of lifting patients, moving heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500 lbs.) and relocating patients in wheelchairs and stretchers. Maintains prolonged arm positions for scanning. Risk of Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens Category I – Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
